    Nicosia, Mar 22 (CNA) -- Cyprus is participating in the Cairo International Fair, which opened yesterday, with 15 exhibitors representing a wide spectrum of the Cyprus industry. The Fair will remain open until March 29.

    US Cyprus envoy better informed on peace talks after meetings

    Nicosia, Mar 22 (CNA) -- The US Cyprus envoy, Thomas Weston, has said he is now better informed about the current state of affairs in the UN-led peace talks and their prospects.

    The US State Department special coordinator for Cyprus welcomed not only the start of direct talks between President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash but also the fact that these talks have been sustained.

    Cyprus MPs address IPU conference in Marakech

    Nicosia, Mar 22 (CNA) -- Cyprus has been re-orienting its environment-related national strategies to correspond to its increased international obligations, particularly those emanating from its accession course to the EU, said Cyprus MP Androula Vassiliou, addressing the 107th Interparliamentary Union Conference taking place in Marrakech.

    Vassiliou said under the chapter on the Environment of the acquis communautaire, many domestic pieces of legislation have been adopted.

    Kyrgyzstan supports Cyprus' efforts to reach just settlement

    Nicosia, Mar 22 (CNA) -- President of Kyrgyzstan Askar Akayev has expressed his country's support to the efforts for reaching a solution to the Cyprus problem based on the relevant UN resolutions.

    At the same time, Akayev expressed his country's desire to enhance bilateral relations with Cyprus, especially in the fields of economy and trade. He welcomed the fact that Cyprus was one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with Kyrgyzstan, in February 2002.

    Cyprus set to close three more chapters in EU negotiations by May

    Nicosia, Mar 22 (CNA)-Cyprus' chief negotiator with the European Union George Vassiliou has said that three of the four remaining chapters of the acquis communautaire are expected to close provisionally by May.

    Vassiliou, who was speaking in Brussels after talks with EU officials, said that in April Cyprus will close the chapter on Regional Policy and probably that on Taxation, while the chapter on Competition is expected to close in May.

    Regarding the chapter on Agriculture, Vassiliou said Cyprus is ready to close it by June, before the end of the Spanish Presidency.

    Cyprus halloumi registered in the UK

    Nicosia, Mar 22 (CNA) -- Cyprus traditional "halloumi" cheese has been recently registered as a certification mark to the United Kingdom's Trade Marks Registry, in the name of the Permanent Secretary of the Cyprus Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism. The registration's validity runs back to December 22nd 1990, when the Republic had submitted its application to UK's Registration Authority.

    Nicosia, Mar 22 (CNA) - Cyprus' Social Insurance Fund is much better than that of many other European countries, Minister of Labour Andreas Moushouttas said here today, adding that Cyprus "is proud of its social security scheme".

    Speaking at a press conference on the occasion of a seminar on "Pension Reform in Central and Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean", Moushouttas added that "no reform can be achieved if it does not have the support of all social partners".
