Cyprus veteran politician Spyros Kyprianou had quiet night

Nicosia, Mar 12 (CNÁ) -- Former President of Cyprus Spyros Kyprianou, who is being treated for cancer at the Cyprus Oncology Centre in Nicosia, has passed a quiet night without special problems.

A medical bulletin issued this morning says Kyprianou's health condition "remains irreversibly critical".

Doctors extend condolences to Kyprianou's family

Nicosia, Mar 12 (CNA) -- Doctors who have been looking after the late President of the Republic Spyros Kyprianou, who died here this afternoon of cancer, said in a statement that Kyprianou has died after a long battle with cancer.

"This is the last medical communique we shall read out to you," they told journalists outside the Oncology Centre in Nicosia, where Kyprianou was admitted on Saturday after a relapse in his condition.

"Former President of the Republic Spyros Kyprianou unfortunately died today at 1732 after a nine month battle against cancer," Dr Demetris Andreopoulos said.

"I would like to extend my condolences to his family and appeal to you to respect his relatives and his name," he said to the press.

Spyros Kyprianou - Biographical notes

Nicosia, Mar 12 (CNA) -- Spyros Kyprianou, President of Cyprus for 11 years from 1977- 1988 and one of the fore-most politicians of the island died of cancer here today, at the age of 69.

Kyprianou was the first Foreign Minister of the Cyprus Republic and served in that capacity for twelve years, under the presidency of Archbishop Makarios, the first President of Cyprus, which gained independence from the British colonial rule in 1960.

Spyros Kyprianou was born in Limassol in 1932. After attending the Greek Gymnasium in his home town, he went to London where he studied Economics and Commerce at the City of London College and Law at Grays Inn. He was called to the bar in 1954. He also obtained a diploma in comparative law. He founded the Cypriot Students Union in England (EFEKA).

In 1952 he was appointed Secretary in London of Archbishop Makarios, Ethnarch of Cyprus, and in 1954 he assumed the office of the Secretary of the Cyprus Ethnarchy and projected the Cyprus case for self-determination. He returned to Cyprus in 1959, after the signing of the Zurich and London Agreements granting the island independence from Britain.

On the declaration of independence, on August 16, 1960, President Makarios appointed him Minister of Justice and a few days later, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

In this capacity he represented Cyprus in various conferences, negotiations, meetings and talks. He also accompanied President Makarios in his state visits to several countries including Turkey, West Germany, Japan and the Soviet Union.

He resigned from his post in May 1972 after a serious dispute with the military regime in Athens and withdrew from politics until the coup dedat against Makarios and the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in July 1974.

In the same year he led the Cyprus delegation at the UN General Assembly that discussed the Cyprus problem.

Two years later, he founded the centre-right Democratic Party in Cyprus. In the September 5, 1976 Parliamentary elections his party won 21 out of 35 seats in the House of Representatives. Kyprianou was elected President of the House.

After the death of President Makarios on August 3, 1977, Kyprianou became, under the constitution, Acting President of the Republic and one month later, was unanimously elected President for the remainder of the term of Archbishop Makarios. On February 28, 1978 he was elected, again unopposed, President of the Republic for a full five-year term.

He was re-elected President on February 13, 1983 with the support of his own party and the Leftwing AKEL party, which formed the democratic cooperation front, receiving 56.54 % of the votes.

During his presidency he visited many countries and attended conferences and summits of the United Nations, the Non-Aligned countries and the Commonwealth.

As President, Kyprianou is credited with the economic miracle in Cyprus, after the Turkish invasion and occupation of 37% of its territory.

He participated in Parliamentary elections for the last time in 1996 and was afterwards elected President of the House of Representatives. He served until the end of his term in May 2001, when he withrew from active politics and handed over the Democratic Party's presidency.

Nicosia, Mar 12 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides will attend the funeral on Thursday of the late President of the Republic Spyros Kyprianou, who died this afternoon of cancer at the age of 69.

President Clerides will leave late on Thursday for Barcelona, to attend the European Union informal summit, hosted by Spain, the current EU rotating presidency.

There will be no meeting on Friday in the context of the ongoing UN-led direct talks President Clerides is engaged in with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

Clerides and Denktash continue direct talks

Nicosia, Mar 12 (CNA) -- UN-led direct talks between Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash continued here today with an aim to find a comprehensive solution to the protracted Cyprus problem.

The two community leaders accompanied by their advisors met approximately for one and a half hours this afternoon, near the Nicosia airport situated in the UN-controlled buffer zone, in the presence of UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto.

President Clerides expresses deep sorrow for Kyprianou's death

Nicosia, Mar 12 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides has expressed "deep sorrow" for the death earlier today of former Cyprus President Spyros Kyprianou, whom he described as a "friend and an associate".

As the President issued his statement, tributes were pouring in from the island's political leadership for the man who has left his mark on the history of the Republic and who served his country from various posts.

President Clerides extended his sincere condolences to Kyprianou's family and wished them courage to overcome the loss of their loved one.

"I have been informed with deep sorrow the death of a special son of Cyprus, Spyros Kyprianou. Today Cyprus is in mourning," President Clerides said in a written statement.

"I bid farewell to the man who fought with me for Cyprus, my associate, my friend, the man who for over half a century has served his country from various posts, as Foreign Minister, House President and President of the Republic," Clerides said.

Clerides expressed his government's and his personal "sincere condolences" to Kyprianou's wife Mimi, and his two sons, Achilleas and Markos.

"I wish them courage and strength to overcome this great loss," the President said.

Kyprianou died today at the age of 69 after a long battle against cancer. He was admitted to the Oncology Centre on Saturday after his condition worsened.

House to open condolences book for the late Spyros Kyprianou

Nicosia, Mar 12 (CNA) -- The House of Representative will open tomorrow a book of condolences, in memory of former Cyprus President and former House President Spyros Kyprianou, who died earlier today of cancer at the age of 69.

"As the minimum expression of appreciation and honour for the late President of the Republic and former President of the House of Representatives, Spyros Kyprianou, the House will open tomorrow, Wednesday, a book of condolences," a House statement said here today.

The book will be open from 9.00 am until 1.00 pm and from 3.00 to 5.00 pm. The book will be in the main room where the House plenum meets.

Tassos Papadopoulos, leader of the Democratic Party (DIKO), said "Kyprianou's death is a personal loss of a friend."

He expressed "very deep sorrow" on behalf of the leadership and the people of DIKO, the party Kyprianou founded in the mid 1970s, and said flags at party offices will fly at half mast on Thursday when the funeral will take place.

DIKO offices will close on Thursday and all party functions and activities have been postponed. Kyprianou's photograph will be placed at all party branches and the Executive Office of DIKO will offer its condolences to the bereaved family and attend the funeral.

"We shall make every effort to maintain his memory alive and continue his struggle for the principles he fought for," Papadopoulos said.

Archbishop Chrysostomos will lead the funeral service on Thursday, at one o'clock, in a Nicosia church. Kyprianou will be buried in Limassol at a private ceremony at the request of his family.
