[01] UN top envoy: I have reason to hope for progress

Larnaca, Nov 2 (CNA) -- Alvaro de Soto, UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus, arrived here today for consultations "in furtherance of the good offices" of the Secretary General, noting that the terrorist attacks of 11 September in the US have not distracted the attention of either Kofi Annan or the Security Council from the Cyprus question.

De Soto said he is here because he has reason to hope that progress can be achieved in the effort to resume the stalled peace negotiations for a comprehensive settlement and stressed that it would not be a good thing to allow more time to pass before talks on the substance can resume.
