    [01] Cyprus Defence Minister to visit Greece

    Nicosia, Nov 2 (CNA) -- Cyprus Defence Minister Sokratis Hasikos will visit Greece on 6 November at the invitation of his Greek counterpart Yiannos Papantoniou.

    This would be their first meeting since Papantopniou assumed his new duties as Defence Minister, following a cabinet reshuffle.| CNA/RM/GP/2001

    [02] Morocco supports federal solution in Cyprus

    Nicosia, Nov 2 (CNA) -- Prime Minister Abderrahman El-Youssoufi has expressed Morocco's consistent support for a solution to the Cyprus problem through negotiations and in accordance with UN resolutions providing for a bizonal, bicommunal federation.

    El-Youssoufi was speaking at a meeting Tuesday with Cyprus special envoy Vassos Lyssarides, honorary president of the Socialdemocrats Movement, who handed over a letter from President Glafcos Clerides. The Moroccan premier stressed that his country's policy is based on principles and Morocco would not change its policy because of Turkey's demands.| CNA/RM/GP/2001

    [03] Cyprus - De Soto - Visit - Consultations

    Nicosia, Nov 2 (CNA) -- UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto, due to arrive in Cyprus this afternoon, will hold separate meetings with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, before traveling to Turkey and Greece where he will hold consultations with government officials.

    A UN peace keeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) press release issued here today, said the Spokesman of the UN Secretary General announced yesterday in New York that de Soto will "travel to Cyprus, Turkey and Greece for consultations in furtherance of the Secretary General's mission of good offices."| CNA/RM/GP/2001

    Cyprus to host "Luxembourg group" meeting

    Nicosia, Nov 2 (CNA) -- Cyprus will host the 5th Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the candidate countries for European Union membership, known as "Luxembourg Group", on 23 November to be held in the southern coastal town of Limassol.

    Cyprus along with Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Estonia and Slovenia are the six candidate countries comprising the first group aspiring to join the EU.| CNA/RM/GP/2001

    Nicosia, Nov 2 (CNA) -- Cyprus Deputy Permanent Representative at the Fourth UN Committee George Kasoulides has said Cyprus maintains close relations with its neighbours in the Middle East and attaches great importance to the enhancement of the economic and social conditions of the Palestinian people and fervently hopes for lasting peace and security in the Middle East.

    In his remarks at the Committee's discussion on the UN Refugees Relief Programme (UNRWA) Kasoulides, pointed out that Cyprus feels close to the Middle East since the Cypriot people have themselves experienced the tragedy of displacement and uprooting, when Turkey invaded the island in 1974, an official press release issued here today said.| CNA/RM/GP/2001

    [06] Cyprus Telecommunications involved in Black Sea Cable system

    Nicosia, Nov 2 (CNA) -- The Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CYTA) announced today the operation of the Black Sea Fibre Optic Cable System (BSFOCS), saying CYTA is one of eleven co-owners and it has been selected as the commercial manager of the system.

    The system, which started operating on 1 September 2001, is a high capacity telecommunications system, which covers the Black Sea region and offers excellent quality at a low cost.|
