    [01] Lyssarides - Libya - Cyprus problem

    Nicosia, Oct 9 (CNA) -- Honorary President of the Social Democrats Movement Vassos Lyssarides told CNA today that his two-day visit to Libya last week and his meeting there with Libyan President Colonel Muammar Quandafi to whom he conveyed a message from Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, were "particularly successful."

    Lyssarides visited Libya as Clerides' special envoy to convey the presidential message as part of a campaign aimed to avert any move by Islamic countries to recognise the illegal regime in the areas of the Cyprus Republic occupied Turkish-occupied since 1974. CNA/NMA/RM/GP/2001

    [02] Cyprus - Pakistan - Military attache - Representations

    Nicosia, Oct 9 (CNA) -- The Cyprus Foreign Ministry was making representations to the Foreign Ministry of Pakistan for the illegal visit of the country's Turkey-based military attache to the areas of Cyprus occupied by Turkish troops since 1974, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou announced today.

    Papapetrou said this was not the first visit of a Pakistani military attache to Cyprus' occupied areas. A Pakistani military attache along with a military attache from Bosnia-Herzegovina visited the occupied areas, two years ago. CNA/MK/GP/2001

    [04] Cyprus - Paraguay - Diplomatic relations

    Nicosia, Oct 9 (CNA) -- Cyprus and Paraguay have signed an agreement to establish diplomatic relations.

    An official press release issued here today says the agreement was signed yesterday in Geneva by Permanent Representatives of Cyprus and Paraguay to the United Nations, Alexandros Vikis and Ramirez Betner. CNA/RM/GP/2001

    [05] Cyprus FM - Brussels - Patten - Solana

    Brussels, Oct 9 (CNA) -- The efforts to combat international terrorism and developments in the Cyprus problem was the focus of meetings Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides had in Brussels today with EU External Relations Commissioner Chris Patten and EU High Representative on Common Foreign and Security Policy Xavier Solana.

    Patten has expressed EU's satisfaction with the measures taken by Cyprus in the joint effort to combat international terrorism and money laundering.

    [06] Cyprus - Greece - Military Exercises

    Nicosia, Oct 9 (CNA) -- Cyprus and Greece have decided not to go ahead with the annual joint military exercise code-named "Nikiforos - Toxotis" originally scheduled to take place this month. The two exercises will take place separately.

    The first, "Nikiforos", carried out by the Cyprus National Guard will take place as scheduled, October 16-21, while the second, "Toxotis", carried out by Greece's airforce and navy, will take place at a later stage. The date for "Toxotis" will be decided after consultations between the two governments. CNA/MF/RM/GP/2001

    [07] Cyprus FM - EU-Cyprus Joint Parliamentary Committee

    Brussels, Oct 9 (CNA) -- Cyprus will remain firm in its position to cooperate with the UN Secretary General in efforts to reach a solution to the Cyprus problem, Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides stated here today, adding that the Cyprus problem could only be solved through negotiations.

    Speaking at the EU - Cyprus Joint Parliamentary Committee meeting in Brussels, Kasoulides referred to international efforts aimed at finding a solution to the Cyprus question and the intransigence shown by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, while referring to the combat against terrorism, he said Cyprus fully backs the action plan adopted by the EU member-states and is committed to work with the US and other states to that end.
