    [01] JPC - Cyprus - EU

Brussels, Oct 10 (CNA) -- Cyprus will be the first among the candidate countries to complete the accession negotiations with the European Union (EU), Commissioner for enlargement Gunter Verheugen predicted yesterday, adding the EU would have preferred a solution to the Cyprus problem to be reached prior to Cyprus' accession, pointing out however that, that is not a precondition.

Speaking at the EU-Cyprus Joint Parliamentary Committee meeting in Brussels, Verheugen expressed disappointment for the refusal of Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash to accept the UN Secretary General's invitation for talks on Cyprus on September 12, a move that was backed by Ankara, he said. [02] Greek - Turkish Cypriot parties - Meeting

Nicosia, Oct 10 (CNA) -- Greek and Turkish Cypriot political parties today strongly condemned the recent terrorist attacks against the US and international terrorism and pointed out that "economic, political and religious problems and differences have to be tackled by the international community, effectively and justly" however "not by way of terrorism of any sort."

In a joint communique, the leaders and representatives of the parties, who met here today also called upon "all people of Cyprus to join the celebrations of the United Nations Day", to be held at the Ledra Palace Hotel in the buffer zone and said during their meeting they discussed "the possibilities to take concrete steps aiming at rapprochement between the two Cypriot communities." They added that they have created a sub-committee for organizing future bicommunal events. CNA/DN/MK/RM/2001
