    [02] Bank of Cyprus - Athens Stock Exchange

    Nicosia, Nov 8 (CNA) -- Bank of Cyprus' share closed today, first day of its trading in the Athens Stock Exchange, at 3.110 drachmae (5,23 Cyprus pounds) recording gains of 10 drachmae compared to its issue price (one Cyprus pound is trading at 1,50 US dollars).

    Bank of Cyprus, the island's largest financial institution, is the first foreign firm to be listed in the Athens Stock Exchange, of which the General Index today went down by 1,35 per cent.

    Geneva, Nov 8 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides had a 30-minute meeting here today with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

    President Clerides, who was accompanied by his senior aides , did not make any comment afterwards.

    [04] Turkish Cypriot leader - UN Secretary-General

    by Maria Myles Geneva, Nov 8 (CNA) - UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan met today in Geneva with Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, who said he was "pleased with the meeting".

    Denktash said "we are leaving very satisfied" and that he heard what Annan had to say and that Annan did the same, adding that "we had a very good exchange of views".

    [05] UN Secretary-General - Statement (1)

    by Maria Myles Geneva, Nov 8 (CNA) - UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has invited the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides to a sixth round of talks in January in Geneva and announced that his Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto would visit Athens, Ankara and Nicosia in December.

    The UN chief had separate meetings here today with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash. CNA/MM/RG/GP/2000

    [06] European Commission - Cyprus - Report

    Brussels, Nov 8 (CNA) - Over the past year, Cyprus has achieved substantive progress in various areas of the acquis communautaire and continues to fulfil the Copenhagen political criteria, the European Commission says in its Regular Report on Cyprus' progress towards accession to the European Union (EU) for the year 2000.

    The Commission also says that in the fourth round of the UN-led proximity talks, aiming at reaching a settlement of the island's political problem, there were encouraging signs that the two sides were engaging in a substantive discussion.

    [07] UN Secretary-General - Statement (2) FULL STORY

    by Maria Myles Geneva, Nov 8 (CNA) - UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said he has given the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides his assessment and observations on the state of affairs in the Cyprus peace talks and added that these (assessment and observations) aim at making a further step in the direction of a comprehensive approach to a settlement.

    Annan said he expects the two parties to study the assessment until the next round of talks in January next year, adding that the parties are still at the negotiating table, that the proximity talks his Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto conducts have got into the substance of the talks and that the parties are quite engaged, a development he described as "good progress".
