Nicosia, May 24 (CNA) - Greek Cypriot AKEL party and Turkish Cypriot Republican Party (TRP) have expressed their support to the upgrading of the Cyprus proximity talks so that a substantive direct dialogue between the leaders of the two communities takes place.

A joint communique issued after a three-hour meeting at the AKEL headquarters in Nicosia, chaired by the leaders of the two parties Demetris Christofias and Mehmet Ali Talat, respectively, warns that the loss of time for a settlement in Cyprus "entails serious dangers for both communities".

Nicosia, May 24 (CNA) - Deputy President of the Cyprus House of Representatives Nicos Anastasiades and President of the Turkish National Assembly Yildirim Akbulut expressed the hope and conviction that results could be achieved from the Cyprus peace talks, if good will prevails, for the mutual benefit of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

The two men had a private meeting on the sidelines of the 2nd meeting of the Presidents of Euro-Mediterranean Parliaments, which ended today in Egypt, during which they discussed the latest developments in the Cyprus question and the upcoming third round of peace talks, according to an official announcement.

Nicosia, May 24 (CNA) - The Union of Cyprus Journalists (UCJ) has strongly condemned the illegal arrest and detention for several hours on Tuesday of editor-in-chief of Turkish Cypriot "Avrupa" newspaper Shener Levent and four other journalists by the regime in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus.

In an announcement issued today, the UCJ says the incident occurred while the union of media employees, Basin - Sen, attempted to carry out a collection to raise funds for the daily, facing closure after its premises were raided and its equipment confiscated last week.
