0900:CYPPRESS:01[01] President Clerides - Surgery Nicosia, May 5 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides was undergoing surgery this morning to remove a polyp from his large intestine, at private clinic in Nicosia."Everything is ready and the health services at Nicosia General Hospital are ready to offer any help needed," Health Minister Frixos Savides said.Four surgeons, two other doctors and one anaesthetist were taking part in the operation. Many of the President's aides are already at the private clinic "Evangelistria" where the operation is taking place. Undersecretary to the President Pantelis Kouros, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou and Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs Takis Christopoulos, a doctor by profession, are at the clinic. Present outside the building are many journalists and TV crews. A medical press release is to be issued at around lunchtime after the operation is over. CNA MM/GP/2000ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY0920:CYPPRESS:02[02] Turkish Cypriot politician - HealthNicosia, May 5 (CNA) -- Turkish Cypriot politician Dervis Eroglu has had a heart problem which doctors have described as "acute coronary syndrome", UN acting spokesman Paul Kolken told CNA today, replying to questions.A doctor from Turkey is expected in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus to examine Eroglu, he said. "Mr Eroglu had a heart problem at two o'clock in the morning. It is an acutre coronary syndrome," he explained, adding that a heart specialist will be flown in from Ankara to examine the patient. The specialist may perform an angiograph and if necessary Eroglu may be flown to Ankara, he said. Eroglu is the so-called prime minister of the illegal regime in the areas occupied by Turkish troops since 1974, recognised only by Turkey. CNA MM/GP/2000ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1030:CYPPRESS:03[03] Government Spokesman - President's health - Cyprus issueNicosia, May 5 (CNA) -- Cyprus Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said here today that there has been no change in the plans to resume UN-led peace talks on Cyprus later this month but stressed that developments will depend on the state of the President's health, who is undergoing surgery today to remove a polyp from his large intestine.The spokesman also said no political problem arises from the situation as it develops, as a result of President Glafcos Clerides' illness, adding however that it is reasonable to assume that the talks may be postponed for a later date than the initial (set for 23 May). CNA MM/GP/2000ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1320:CYPPRESS:05[05] President Clerides - Medical press releaseNicosia, May 5 (CNA) -- Doctors who operated this morning on President Glafcos Clerides said the surgery to remove a polyp from the large intestine ended without any problems and expressed the conviction all will proceed smoothly.The President is now in the intensive care and his condition is described as stable and satisfactory. He is breathing without the help of a respiratory machine. "President Clerides went into the theatre at 0810 this morning and the operation started at 0830 and ended at 1200 noon exactly," the medical press release said. (Local time is three hours ahead of GMT). Everything went smoothly during the operation and there were no special problems. The press release, read out by doctor Iosif Kasios, said that "there was a polyp in the large intestine which was removed with part of the intestine. The President is recovering normally and is now in intensive care. His condition is stable and satisfactory." The next medical press release on President Clerides' condition will be issued at 2000 tonight. The medical team comprised four surgeons, who operated in the presence of the President's doctors. Two anaesthetists and a gastroenterologist were also present during surgery. George Kyriakides, one of the doctors who operated, said the part of the intestine which was removed had been sent for a biopsy and the results are expected on Monday. Asked when the President will be able to travel, he said a period of six weeks to two months is needed for a full recovery. Doctor Andreas Constantinides said the doctors were pleased with the results so far and thanked the President for the trust he had shown in the Cypriot medics and decided to have the operation in Cyprus. The President was admitted to the clinic Tuesday for a medical check up and was kept for observation after doctors located a polyp in his large intestine.
