    [01] President Clerides - Written statement By Maria Myles

    Geneva, Feb 2 (CNA) - President Glafcos Clerides today issued a written statement outlining the general principles guiding the UN-led proximity talks, with which he makes it clear that the Greek Cypriot side "is ready to negotiate a settlement withi n the parameters established by Security Council resolutions".

    The Cypriot President underlines that the aim is not to create a new state but to amend the Constitution of the Republic of Cyprus from a unitary to a federal state and rules out the possibility of a confederation of two states demanded by Tur kish C ypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

    [02] USS Underwood - Larnaca

    Nicosia, Feb 2 -- US Navy Ship USS Underwood, is currently visiting the southern port of Larnaca on a routine visit through February 4, during which its crew will have the opportunity to relax and visit tourist sites on the island.

    A US Embassy press release says the 138-metre Guided Missile Frigate, with approximately 250 sailors, will not be open for public visits during its stay in Larnaca.

    Geneva, Feb 2 (CNA) - President Glafcos Clerides today broke his silence and issued a written statement outlining the general principles guiding the UN-led proximity talks, in response to numerous statements made by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denkt ash that were not in line with UN resolutions on Cyprus and agreements reached between the two sides in the past.

    After informing the UN on his intention, the President issued a four- page statement in Geneva, where peace talks are taking place, making it abundantly clear that the Greek Cypriot side "is ready to negotiate a settlement within the parameters estab lished by Security Council resolutions".

    [04] Denktash - Meeting - Statements

    Geneva, Feb 2 (CNA) - Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash insisted here Tuesday over the creation of a confederation in Cyprus, contrary to UN resolutions, also claiming that the Constitution of the Cyprus Republic is "dead and burried".

    Speaking after meeting UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser, Alvaro de Soto, within the framework of the second round of UN proximity talks underway in Geneva, Denktash said he "did not take seriously" a statement made earlier today by Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides.
