    [01] Cook - Papandreou - Cyprus - Turkey - EU

London, Oct 19 (CNA) -- British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook said Cyprus' merits for accession to the European Union are strong and recalled the recent Commission report demonstrating that Cyprus has made more progress than most of the other candidates.

Speaking after a meeting yesterday in London with his Greek counterpart George Papandreou, Cook said they both shared a common wish to see Cyprus becoming a full member of the EU, but also noted that Britain believes "it would be right to recognise Turkey as a candidate for membership of the EU".
