    [01] Government - Cyprus problem - Turkey's EU course

    Nicosia, Sep 17 (CNA) -- Cyprus' reasonable stance in efforts for the resumption of bicommunal talks aiming at a settlement of the Cyprus problem is appreciated by the international public opinion, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said today.

    He reaffirmed the government position, also shared by Greece, that Turkey could get closer to Europe if it complied with the criteria set by the European Union for all candidate countries for membership.

    [02] Defence Minister - Athens

    Larnaca, Sep 17 (CNA) -- Defence Minister Socratis Hasikos left today for an official visit to Greece for talks on Saturday with his counterpart Akis Tsohatzopoulos that will focus on a joint defence pact agreed between the two countries.

    In statements to the press before his departure, Hasikos said the annual National Guard exercise codenamed "Nikiforos" has been brought forward to October 2 - 7 so that it does not coincide with any possible peace talks that may take place at the end of the same month.

    [03] Kranidiotis' funeral

    Athens, Sep 17 (CNA) -- The contribution of late Alternate Foreign Minister of Greece Yiannos Kranidiotis in efforts for a solution to the Cyprus problem and for the island's accession to the European Union (EU) were praised today by the Greek and Cypriot leadership at his funeral.

    Biding farewell to the late Cypriot-born Minister Greek Premier Costas Simitis said his death was for him "a great personal loss" and added that "Greece and Cyprus owe him a lot".

    [04] Government Spokesman - Goethe Institute

    Nicosia, Sep 17 (CNA) -- Germany's cultural activities in Cyprus will continue despite a decision by the Federal Republic to close the Goethe Institute in Nicosia and other European cities, Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said today.

    This was also reaffirmed by German Ambassador to Cyprus Gabriele Von Malsen-Tilborch who told CNA "the future work of the Goethe Institute will focus more on very poor and developing countries where they really have nothing else".
