    [01] Cyprus - Britain - Military exercises

Nicosia, Aug 10 (CNA) -- The Cyprus and British governments have initialed a memorandum which includes an agreement on terms concerning military exercises of the British Bases on the island.

It has been agreed that the Bases use the Kalo Chorio National Guard firing range instead of the environmentally sensitive Akamas peninsula they have been using so far.

British military exercises in the Akamas peninsula on the western tip of the island, had caused an uproar among both local and international environmental organisation.

The memorandum was initialed by Foreign Ministry Director of Political Affairs Division (Cyprus Question) Tasos Tzionis, on behalf of the Cyprus government and John Buck, Deputy High Commissioner, on behalf of Britain.

The British military exercises will take place from August 10 to 19. Britain has maintained two bases on the island after it granted Cyprus its independence in 1960.

    [02] Church - Engagement - Scrapped

Nicosia, Aug 10 (CNA) -- The Cyprus Orthodox Church has decided to scrap religious engagement ceremonies as from October in an effort to discourage sex before marriage.

The decision was taken by the Church's highest body, the Holy Synod, and priests read out a relevant circular at church services across the island on Sunday.

The Church maintains people treat an engagement like a marriage and as an excuse for cohabitation, something it strongly objects to.

The Synod also considered allegations that engagements are used by some as a way of raising money, since it is customary, just as it is at weddings, for guests to give cash instead of gifts to the happy couple.

According to the Holy Synod decision, religious engagement ceremonies will be conducted only until October 1999.
