[01] Mediterranean Peace Cruise - Larnaca - Reception

Nicosia, Aug 9 (CNA) -- Cyprus' Scouts will give a hearty reception to the vessel operating the Mediterranean Peace Cruise, an event aiming at promoting cooperation and brotherhood among the youth of Mediterranean countries.

The Cruise is organised by the World Scout Movement in cooperation with the European Youth Forum, the European Commission, the International Red Cross and UNESCO.

A Polish vessel, crewed by young people from the Mediterranean countries including a Cypriot Scout, yesterday set sail from Alexandria, Egypt, and will conclude the Cruise in the Greek port of Piraeus on September 14th.

It will visit in Israel, Lebanon, Cyprus, Turkey and Greece with rotating crews, each spending 10 days aboard.

The vessel will take at Larnaca on August 18 and the following day the town's Mayor George Licourgos and the Cyprus Scouts Association (CSA) will hold a welcome reception for the crew at the town's City Hall.

Larnaca's District Scout Commissioner Christos Marneros told CNA the reception includes Cyprus folk-dance and a photo exhibition.

"The aim of the event", he pointed out, "is to promote peace, brotherhood and cooperation among the peoples of the Mediterranean and Europe".

According to CSA's International Relations Commissioner, Kyriacos Kameris, twenty-four children will come to Cyprus by air to replace the same number of crew who will be aboard the vessel on its way to Larnaca.

All forty-eight children will be hosted at the CSA camping site at the mountain resort of Kakopetria and they will visit museums, the Kykkos Monastery and the cease-fire line.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory.
