[01] Cyprus House of Representatives - Yugoslavia

Nicosia, Mar 25 (CNA) -- The Cyprus House of Representatives described the use of force against Yugoslavia as an "unacceptable provocation of international order and the UN Charter".

House President Spyros Kyprianou in a statement on behalf of the parliamentary parties said "no resolution of the Security Council authorises NATO or any country to use military force against Yugoslavia".

Kyprianou said no doubt the bombardments "will not solve the Kosovo problem".

On the contrary, he said, they would increase human pain and the refugee problem and "create conditions of instability and uncertainty in the sensitive Balkan area."

He recalled that international law stipulates avoidance of use of force.

All Cypriot political parties have denounced NATO air strikes against Yugoslavia.

    [02] EU - Negotiators - Cyprus meeting

Nicosia, Mar 25 (CNA) -- Representatives of the five countries of Central and Eastern Europe, which together with Cyprus will be the first countries to join the European Union in the next enlargement, were arriving in Cyprus today to coordinate action.

Negotiators from Hungary, Poland, Estonia, the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Cyprus will meet for the fifth time since the start of membership talks last November.

During their two-day meeting in the southern coastal town of Limassol, the six negotiators, including Cyprus' chief negotiator, George Vassiliou, will examine issues concerning accession and the EU.

An official press release issued here says they will discuss the policy to protect competition, free movement of goods and capital, harmonisation of the banking sector, as well as the economic aspects of Agenda 2000.

The negotiators will be received tomorrow by President Glafcos Clerides and will give a press conference on Saturday at the end of their deliberations.

Cyprus applied for EU membership in 1990. It signed an association agreement in 1972 and a customs union protocol in 1987.

    [03] Cyprus - Clerides - Yugoslavia

Nicosia, Mar 25 (CNA) -- Cyprus supports a peaceful resolution of the Yugoslav crisis, pledged President, Glafcos Clerides.

In statements after a parade on the occasion of Greek Independence Day, Clerides expressed the view that "Kosovo should remain within Yugoslav boarders, with some form of autonomy for its administration".

Noting that "the Cyprus government supports a peaceful resolution" of the crisis, Clerides said "it is time the Security Council became interested in the Kosovo issue".

On his part, Commander of the National Guard, Lieutenant General Demetrios Demou, stressed the significant role of a complete anti-aircraft defence system.

He said the bombardment of Yugoslavia is being carried out "with missiles systems, because of the fear of Serbia's anti-aircraft defence".

"This proves the significant role a complete anti-aircraft defence system can play" in a country, he added.

The Cyprus government decided last year not to deploy the Russian made S300 anti-aircraft missile system in an effort to reduce tension.

Last month, Athens and Moscow agreed on the deployment of the S300 in Greece.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory.

Meanwhile, a gathering will be held outside the Embassy of the Republic of Yugoslavia this afternoon.

The gathering is organised by the Cyprus - Yugoslav Friendship Association in an effort to express their solidarity to the people of Yugoslavia.

[04] Cyprus - Greek Independence Day - Celebrations

Nicosia, 25 (CNA) -- Greek Cypriots today celebrated Greek Independence Day, with parades and church services throughout the free areas of the Republic.

A church service was held in Nicosia this morning and was officiated by the primate of the Greek Orthodox Church on the island, Archbishop Chrysostomos.

It was attended by President Glafcos Clerides, House President Spyros Kyprianou, Greek Ambassador, Kyriakos Rodousakis, ministers, party leaders and military and police chiefs.

March 25 marks the uprising of 1821 for independence from about 400 years of Ottoman rule and is celebrated by Greeks all over the world.

Parades were also held in all towns with war veterans, organisations, pupils and students taking part.

President Clerides, flanked by Archbishop Chrysostomos and the Greek Ambassador, took the salute outside the Greek Embassy.

In statements, Clerides said today's anniversary "is a day which should make everyone think about our future".

"It is also a day which takes us back to the freedom of Greece from the yoke of Turks", he added.

The Commander of the National Guard, Lieutenant-General Demetrios Demou, expressed the hope that today's anniversary "will mark the freedom of the occupied areas of Cyprus".

Ministers took the salute of similar parades held in other towns in the free areas.

President Clerides yesterday sent congratulatory messages to Greece's President and Prime Minister, Constantinos Stephanopoulos and Costas Simitis, noting that Cyprus is inspired in its struggle for freedom from the heroes of 1821.

He also thanked them for Greece's unwavering support to the struggle of the Cypriot people for survival.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of the island's territory.

    [05] Illegal immigrants - Arrival

Nicosia, Mar 25 (CNA) -- All 89 illegal immigrants who had left Cyprus yesterday following the decision of the Lebanese government to take them back, returned to Lebanon this morning.

A Police statement here Thursday said the immigrants disembarked from a Cypriot cruiser which sailed from Larnaca yesterday morning.

The 89 illegal immigrants arrived in Cyprus last week from Tripoli, Lebanon, on a small boat. They were taken on board the cruiser and given humanitarian aid while consultations took place between the governments of Cyprus and Lebanon to repatriate them.

The lebanese government informed the Cyprus government on Tuesday night that it was ready to implement a bilateral agreement on matters relating to illegal immigrants and take back the 89 persons of various nationalities.

"All procedures and arrangements agreed with the Lebanese authorities were implemented, and the issue is now over", the Police said.

"The Cyprus government once again expresses its satisfaction to the friendly neighbouring country of Lebanon for its understanding and cooperation", the Police statement concluded.
