    [03] Rolandis - Russia

Nicosia, Mar 24 (CNA) -- Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Nicos Rolandis, currently visiting Russia, has had several meetings with a view to boost bilateral trade relations.

The minister also attended the official opening of the Sixth International Tourist Fair in Moscow.

Rolandis met today with high ranking Russian officials from the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Commerce and the Russian Academy of Sciences and exchanged views on issues relating to high technology.

He was present at the official opening of the Moscow International Tourist Fair (MITT'99), considered to be one of the most important events in international tourism. Eight-seven countries, including Cyprus, are taking part this year.

Some 100 Cypriot tourist industries are participating, including a large number of hotel owners. The Cypriot pavilion was set up by the Cyprus Tourism Organisation.

Rolandis said this year Cyprus will probably welcome as many Russian tourists as it did last year, when about 200.000 people visited the island.

Russia ranks third, after Britain and Germany, in the list of countries which choose Cyprus as a holiday destination.

[04] Greek Defence Minister - Cyprus

Nicosia, Mar 24 (CNA) -- Greek Defence Minister, Akis Tsohatzopoulos, has said there is capability in the framework of cooperation between Greece and Cyprus to promote certain measures to strengthen the island's deterrent.

Speaking to London Greek Radio (LGR), Tsohatzopoulos said that "under no circumstances will the national defence pact (agreed between the two countries) be downgraded."

He also expressed satisfaction with a statement by Cyprus' President Glafcos Clerides that the national defence pact is still valid and that Cyprus will continue to boost its defence capability.

"I am one of those who demand continuous strengthening of the joint defence pact," the Greek Minister said, adding that "in the framework of cooperation between Greece and Cyprus we have the capability to proceed with a series of specific measures in order to realise this goal."

Replying to questions, Tsohatzopoulos said he sees no problem with the deployment of the Russian-made S-300 anti-aircraft missiles on the Greek island of Crete.

President Glafcos Clerides decided last December not to deploy the S- 300 in Cyprus and instead to negotiate with Moscow their deployment on Crete.

A relevant agreement was reached last February when Defence Minister Yiannakis Chrysostomis visited the Russian capital.

    [06] Greek Ambassador - Message

Nicosia, Mar 24 (CNA) -- Greek Ambassador to Cyprus has stressed good relations between Cyprus and Greece in all fields, including cooperation in defence issues, in a message to Greek Cypriots on the 178th anniversary of the Greek War of Independence.

"Never before have relations between Greece and Cyprus, in every field, flourished to the extent they do today," Kyriakos Rodousakis remarked, adding that the goal is the continuous boosting of Cyprus' defences in the framework of a defence pact agreed between the two countries.

The Greek Ambassador said that "despite the intransigence of the other side (Turkish), Greece and Cyprus will together continue their efforts for a solution to the Cyprus problem," pointing out that both countries are "anxious to see in practice the much-talked about international initiatives after the Turkish elections."

Referring to Cyprus' course of accession to the European Union, Rodousakis said that both communities on the island have come to realise the political and economic benefits they would gain from EU membership.

"The Turkish Cypriot leader (Rauf Denktash) knows that accession would act as a catalyst," Rodousakis noted, pointing out that Denktash feels that he is in a weak position and that is why he prohibits bicommunal contacts.

Concluding, Rodousakis says that "Greece and Cyprus will also fight for peace and stability to prevail in the area, in a very critical time when clouds are thickening over the Balkan sky" expressing the hope that war in Kosovo can be averted.
