    [01] Pilgrims - Apostle Andreas

Nicosia, Sep 13 (CNA) -- More than one thousand Greek Cypriots crossed today to the northern Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus to visit the monastery of Apostle Andreas.

The 1.082 pilgrims, who were of all ages, gathered early today at Ledra Palace check point in Nicosia, holding candles.

Police measures were taken to make sure that things would run smoothly after information that groups objecting to the visit might try to obstruct it.

Members of the Pancyprian Anti-occupation Movement had earlier this week announced their intention to attempt to cross into the Turkish- occupied areas, demanding their right to free movement and free performance of their religious rites.

The roads to Ledra Palace check point were blocked by Police and only those whose names were in official lists prepared by the Presidential Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs were allowed to pass.

The pilgrims crossed into the Turkish occupied part of the divided city to be transferred in Turkish Cypriot buses to the monastery, situated on the north-eastern tip of the island.

Protestors objecting to the pilgrimage gathered to the area close to Ledra Palace chanting patriotic songs and stressing: "We do not wish to become tourists to our own homes."

Cyprus has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion of the island which resulted in the illegal occupation of 37 per cent of the island's territory.

An illegal entity unilaterally proclaimed in the Turkish occupied north is recognised by no other state but Turkey.

A number of UN resolutions have both denounced the illegal proclamation and called upon states not to recognise any other government but that of the Republic of Cyprus while they have also called for the withdrawal of foreign troops from the island.

    [02] Morphou Bishop - Enthronement

Nicosia, Sep 13 (CNA) -- New Morphou Bishop Neophytos was officially enthroned today during a special ceremony held at the Evangelismos church in Nicosia, officiated by Primate of the Church Archbishop Chrysostomos in the presence of President Glafcos Clerides.

The 38-year-old Bishop was elected last month by the overwhelming majority of the Holy Synod, the abbots and elected representatives of the people.

He replaces Bishop Chrysanthos who passed away in January 1996. Bishop Neophytos is from the Turkish occupied village of Zodia, in the Morphou district, which has been partially occupied by Turkish troops since their invasion in 1974. He is based temporarily in Evrychou village, west of Nicosia.

The Bishop has a degree in law and in theology. Speaking at the ceremony, Morphou Mayor Antigone Papadopoulou referred to the tragic consequences of the Turkish invasion and said the people of Morphou trust their new Bishop.
