    [02] Cyprus Left-wing Party - Primakov

Nicosia, Sep 12 (CNA) -- Left-wing AKEL Secretary-General Dimitris Christofias has congratulated Yevgeny Primakov for his election as Russia's new Prime Minister and expressed the hope that he will manage to lead Russia out of the present crisis.

In a congratulatory telegram, Christofias expresses the conviction that "a strong Russia has a positive and important role to play in tackling international problems which have arisen from the so-called new world order."

Referring to Turkey's 24-year occupation of 37 per cent of Cyprus' territory, Christofias says he is convinced Primakov will continue to follow the principles guiding Russian policy towards the Cyprus problem until today as well as Moscow's increased interest in a settlement.

The leader of the left-wing party, which has always maintained close ties with Russia, reassures his party "will continue to actively work towards the further development of the friendly relations between the Russian Federation and the Cyprus Republic in all fields".
