1135:CYPPRESS:01[01] Clerides - Vice President - NAMby Maria ChrysanthouDurban, Aug 30 (CNA) -- The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Glafcos Clerides, has been elected one of the Vice-Presidents of the 12th Non-Aligned (NAM) Summit, taking place here. President Clerides will address the official opening of the meeting on Wednesday on behalf of the European group of NAM member-states. He will also address delegates on Thursday. The political and economic committees have already started discussions on the text of the final communique, expected to be adopted at the end of the two-day meeting on Thursday. The draft communique was prepared by a meeting of NAM Foreign Ministers in April in Cartagena, Colombia. Cyprus' Foreign Minister, Ioannis Kasoulides, attended the April meeting. It is expected that the final communique will include a specific reference to Cyprus. The previous NAM summit communique stressed the need for the UN Security Council to take "resolute action and the necessary measures, including the holding of an international conference and steps for the demilitarisation of Cyprus, as proposed by the President of Cyprus." NAM leaders, who met in October 1995 in Cartagena, expressed concern "at the continuing lack of political will on the part of the Turkish side, as confirmed in the report of the UN Secretary-General of May 1994" and the lack of progress in the search for a just and viable solution in Cyprus. Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Sotos Zakheos, and Foreign Ministry officials, participate in the deliberations for the text of the final text of the Durban communique. Earlier today, President Clerides, in Durban with Kasoulides and Government Spokesman, Christos Stylianides, attended Sunday mass at the local Greek Orthodox church of Ayia Triada. Later today, the Greek and Greek Cypriot community in Durban will host a reception for the President and the Cypriot delegation at the city's Greek club.
