0945:CYPPRESS:01[01] Cypriot MPs - Parliamentary AssemblyNicosia, Aug 29 (CNA) -- Two Cypriot deputies leave Sunday to attend separate meetings of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in Morocco and Portugal.Doros Christodoulides will attend a meeting of heads of political groups of the Assembly, in his capacity as Vice President of the United European Left. Participants to the meeting will meet the Moroccan Premier, the House President and cabinet members. Stathis Kittis will go to Lisbon for a Council meeting on the oceans. Deputies will discuss the European Maritime Heritage, Maritime Industries and exploitation of life at sea. CNA MM/RG/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1130:CYPPRESS:02[02] President - NAMby Maria ChrysanthouDurban, Aug 29 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides arrives here later today to participate in the 12th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement, which starts Saturday with meetings of senior officials from member-states. The meeting, to be attended by 80 heads of state, will be chaired by South African President, Nelson Mandela. Delegates from the 112 participating members will deal with various issues, including trade liberalisation, nuclear disarmament, illiteracy, respect of human rights, the role of armed conflict, cooperation among nations of the South, the effect of globalisation and the abolition of poverty. Cyprus Foreign Minister, Ioannis Kasoulides, and Government Spokesman, Christos Stylianides, will be in Durban for the NAM summit. Cyprus' Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Sotos Zakhaios, will also be part of the Cypriot delegation. The Cypriot community in Durban will give a reception Sunday night in honour of President Clerides. According to the draft programme of the meeting, on Monday, NAM Foreign Ministers will confer and heads of state will start their deliberations on Wednesday. The meeting is expected to close on Thursday, September 3. South African authorities have taken stringent security measures in and around the venue of the meeting as well as the hotels where heads of state are staying. The NAM was set up in 1961 in Belgrade at the initiative of the then Yugoslav President Tito, who was concerned at the confrontation between the US and Russia. At the time 25 countries joined the Movement, which now has 113 members. Yugoslavia has been temporarily suspended from the Movement. CNA MCH/MM/RG/1998ENDS, CYPRUS NEWS AGENCY1330:CYPPRESS:03[03] US Officials - VisitsWashington, Aug 29 (CNA) -- A US Congressman has pointed out to Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, that actions by American officials affect the administration's effort to engage in constructive talks with all interested parties in the Cyprus question.Congressman Bob Weygand has asked Albright to look into reports that US officials have attended celebrations in the self-styled illegal Turkish Cypriot regime in Turkish occupied Cyprus, marking the 24th anniversary of the Turkish invasion, and "clarify the US policy toward Greece and Cyprus". "Actions by US officials, whether sanctioned by the State Department or not, have an impact on our ability to conduct constructive negotiations with all the parties involved", he said in a recent letter to Albright. Reports in the Turkish Cypriot press said that several US officials attended the celebrations in occupied Cyprus. Expressing support for the administration's efforts to seek a peaceful resolution to the existing tensions in Cyprus, Weygand said "it is my belief that the US needs to play a key role in fostering any agreement between Greece, Turkey and Cyprus." The letter noted the reports had caused confusion in the Hellenic and Cypriot communities in Rhode Island and requested Albright to "investigate these allegations and clarify US policy" toward Greece and Turkey. He is accompanied by Foreign Minister, Ioannis Kasoulides, and Government Spokesman, Christos Stylianides. The President will address the opening ceremony of the NAM meeting on Wednesday, on behalf of the European group of NAM member-states. UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, will also be present at the opening of the two-day summit, to be chaired by South African President, Nelson Mandela. On Thursday, President Clerides will address the deliberations of the meeting. Senior officials from participating member-states start their meetings today, followed by talks between the Foreign Ministers on Monday. Heads of state will meet from September 2 - 3.
