[01] Shots against farmers by Turkish troops

Nicosia, Dec 7 (CNA) -- Turkish soldiers fired shots against Greek Cypriot farmers while they were working in their fields.

The new provocative incident against unarmed civilians by the Turkish occupation forces occurred late afternoon yesterday in Denia area, west of Nicosia.

Andreas Andreou, 32, from Akaki village, reported the incident to Cyprus Police.

A local radio reported today a second farmer was also at the scene, Savvakis Christofi.

According to the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC), the two farmers were cultivating their fields in the buffer zone in Denia area, after permission from the UN peace-keeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).

Police have informed UNFICYP about the incident.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of Cyprus territory.

[02] SAE to work towards US diplomacy

    by Rebekah Gregoriades

Thessaloniki, Dec 7 (CNA) -- The world Hellenes Abroad Council (SAE) will work in the direction of American diplomacy in an effort to promote a US initiative towards a Cyprus settlement.

SAE's new efforts will start right after presidential elections in Cyprus, scheduled for February 1998.

This was stated, here, today, by SAE President, Andrew Athens, during a press conference at the end of week-long deliberations of SAE First Assembly.

"Hellenism expects a just solution to the Cyprus problem", Athens said, pointing out that "right after the presidential elections we will see US Presidential Emissary for Cyprus, Richard Holbrooke to see what his plans are."

Referring to the SAE assembly he said "global Hellenism is now a reality" and noted that there was greater unity among participants than in their previous meeting in 1995.

Regional SAE Presidents for the US, Asia and Africa, Europe and Oceania also spoke at the press conference stressing mostly the need for unity.

On his part, SAE General Secretary, Stavros Lambrinides, said the Greek government has as its main priority to promote SAE's role as one of its advisory bodies.

He added the Greek government should "be ready to implement proposals made by SAE".
