[01] SAE approves resolution for Cyprus

    by Rebekah Gregoriades

Thessaloniki, Dec 6 (CNA) -- The world Hellenes Abroad Council (SAE) passed today a resolution calling upon the international community to exercise pressure against Turkey to abandon its threats and expansionist policies against Cyprus.

The international community but particularly the US and the European Union should exercise "substantial pressure towards Turkey to conform with the rules of international law and order and desert its threats and expansionist policy against Cyprus and Hellenism in general", the resolution stresses.

Expressing "serious concern over the continuation of the Cyprus problem", it describes it as "a threat against international peace and security and an injustice committed against the prosperity and happiness of the people of Cyprus".

"An honest, just, democratic and lasting solution to the Cyprus problem must be based on respect for the human rights and freedoms of the whole of the Cyprus people", the resolution remarks.

It adds, a solution should also respect "the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and unity of the Republic of Cyprus" and denounces "any act or intervention turned against the Cyprus Republic".

Turkey's threats of annexing the northern part of the island, it occupies since its invasion of the island in 1974, if the island joins the EU are also denounced and described as "illegal, provocative and against international law and order".

Respect for UN, EU, Commonwealth and Non-Aligned resolutions on Cyprus is also pointed out, as well as the need for Hellenes Abroad to engage more actively in efforts towards a peaceful settlement of the Cyprus problem.

[02] Clerides satisfied with SAE and London meetings

Larnaca, Dec 6 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides expressed satisfaction both with the world Hellenes Abroad Council (SAE) Conference in Thessaloniki and his meetings in London with businessmen and Cypriots living in Britain.

Speaking on his return to Cyprus, this evening, Clerides described the SAE Conference as most successful and noted that substantial proposals were submitted.

He also expressed satisfaction with the interest shown by British businessmen in the role Cyprus can play as a business centre in the Middle East and Eastern Europe.

Asked to comment on the possibility of Attorney General Alecos Markides standing as a candidate for February's presidential elections, Clerides said:

"Markides is a citizen of the Republic and all citizens have the right to stand as candidates".

He pointed out, however, that according to the Cyprus Constitution the Attorney General is an independent official and by entering politics he ceases to be so.

Clerides stressed however that he was not questioning the constitutional but the moral constraints of a possible candidacy by Markides.
