[01] Cypriot Minister discusses defence issues in Athens

Nicosia, Apr 14 (CNA) -- All military exercises will go ahead as planned, Cyprus Defence Minister Costas Eliades has stressed, noting that the defence pact agreed with Greece is also proceeding as planned.

Eliades flew to Athens yesterday to discuss issues related to the defence pact with his Greek counterpart Akis Tsohatzopoulos.

Speaking at Larnaca Airport, Eliades assured that there would be no changes in the programme of military exercises to be carried out by the Republic's National Guard and the Greek armed forces.

Eliades added the infrastructure work in the framework of the Cyprus- Greece National Defence Dogma is proceeding according to plans.

[02] New Cypriot cruise liner takes to the waves

Nicosia, Apr 14 (CNA) -- Louis Cruise Lines added over the weekend another gem to its fleet of luxurious liners taking cruise lovers to sea-borne adventures all the way to the Caribbean, a first for a Cypriot cruise line.

"With the addition of the "Emerald" to our existing fleet of six liners, we can now play a role outside the Mediterranean region. It's a very important step for us," said Louis Marketing General Manager, George Michaelides.

As of this winter, the "Emerald" will be cruising to the Caribbean, something which Michaelides said will add a new dimension to Cypriot maritime affairs and establish Cyprus' competitiveness in international cruising.

The liner arrived in Limassol last Saturday. It is the second liner in the Louis fleet, after the "Sapphire", to be chartered exclusively by the United Kingdom's largest tour operator, "Thompson".

Starting next month, the two liners will be taking their mainly British passengers to week-long cruises from Majorca, Spain, to different ports in the Mediterranean.

Next winter, the "Emerald" will be cruising in the Caribbean and the "Sapphire" in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Red Sea.

The "Emerald" went through a 72 million US dollar renovation three years ago. It has 1.200 beds and 500 cabins equipped with all the necessary amenities like television, telephone, radio and other luxuries.

The ten-floor "Emerald" also comes with six lounges, four bars, a swimming pool, jacuzzi, gym, sauna, animation hall, disco, library, duty- free shops, a hair dressing salon, casino, and is equipped with state-of- the-art navigation and security systems.

With the addition of its newest liner, Louis Cruise Lines is now the largest cruise company in the east Mediterranean and one of the largest in Europe.

The six Louis liners will offer 362 cruises this year, serving more than 215.000 holiday makers.
