[01] Polish parliamentary Speaker to visit Cyprus

Speaker of the Polish Parliament (SEJM), Josef Zych, will head the ten- member delegation arriving at Larnaca International Airport on Monday.

During their stay, the delegates will be received by President of the Republic, Glafcos Clerides, as well as House President, Spyros Kyprianou.

They will also meet with Acting Foreign Affairs Minister, Minister of the Interior, Dinos Michaelides.

The delegation will hold a meeting with the House Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Cyprus.

The Polish parliamentarians will have the chance to visit the demarcation line separating the government controlled areas of the Republic from the Turkish-occupied part of the island, accompanied by Nicosia mayor, Lellos Demetriades.

They will also travel to the southern coastal town of Limassol to meet with Mayor Demetris Kontides.

The Polish deputies leave on April 16.

[02] Cyprus - Belarus to sign trade agreement

Cyprus and Belarus are due to sign a trade agreement, a tourism cooperation agreement and an accord on cooperation in economic, scientific, technical and industrial affairs.

The Minister left Saturday for Belarus, accompanied by a multi-member delegation of officials from the Cyprus Tourism Organisation, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Planning Bureau.

Some 28 Cypriot businessmen will also be part of the Cypriot delegation to promote Cypriot exports of goods and services to the country.

Christofi, who visits Belarus at the invitation of Minister for Foreign Finance Relations, Michail Marinich, will meet the country's Premier G. Link.

Talks with government officials will aim to improve and further develop bilateral ties in the fields of trade, industry and tourism.

During the visit, the Cypriot Ministry and the Chamber will organise a seminar to outline the opportunities Cyprus offers as a centre for services and the promotion of Belarus exports.

[03] Espionage charges against Turk to be withheld

Klerides told a private television network that Nedjip Srichichekli, 45, will only be tried on charges in connection with a bomb attack against the premises of the Kurdish Cultural Centre in the southern coastal town of Limassol in February last year.

The charge of placing a bomb carries a maximum penalty of 14 years imprisonment, he said. Spying charges carry a maximum ten year jail sentence.

He pointed out that a trial on espionage charges would probably disclose sensitive information relating to the Republic's defences.

Klerides also indicated that Nedjip's Turkish Cypriot lawyers, who live in the Turkish occupied part of the island, may carry in their voluminous files on the case classified information about the Republic's defences.

Nedjip, arrested on March 8 this year, was due to appear before the Assize Court in June to face charges of espionage and placing a bomb. He will now be charged with placing explosives, possession of explosives, a time bomb and a detonator.

Police had found in his possession military documents, maps outlining the positions of army camps and newspaper clippings on National Guard matters.

Limassol District Court, which referred the case to the Assize Court, released last month another Turk and a Turkish Cypriot, initially held in connection with espionage charges for lack of evidence.
