[01] Issue of missing persons top priority, says Clerides

Nicosia, Mar 16 (CNA) -- The issue of persons missing since the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus is considered top priority and the government will continue striving for its resolution despite the difficulties entailed.

Speaking at a "Marathon of Love" dedicated to the missing persons, President Glafcos Clerides noted that the resolution of the problem is made all the more difficult due to Turkish intransigence and unwillingness to cooperate.

"We insist", he stressed, "on the determination of the fate of every single one of the missing persons with the presentation of convincing evidence."

President Clerides also pointed out that the issue of missing persons, which he described as one of the "most tragic aspects of the Cyprus problem", was the first issue he put forward at his recent meeting with UN Secretary General, Kofi Anan.

The Marathon set off from Saint Alexandros chapel, situated at Pyrga village south of Nicosia, which is dedicated to the missing persons and finished at the Archbishopric in Nicosia

Meanwhile, in London, members of the British Committee of Relatives of Missing Persons organised a vigil outside the Turkish Embassy and left a letter addressed to the Turkish Ambassador at the entrance of the building.

In their letter they demand from Ankara to change its attitude, cooperate and facilitate the work of the UN tripartite Investigatory Committee in determining the fate of all missing persons.
