[01] EU-Cyprus Joint Parliamentary Committee meets next week

Among the topics up for discussion during the March 18-19 meeting will be EU-Cyprus relations, Cyprus' application for accession to the EU, the condition of the enclaved in the Turkish-occupied part of the island, free movement of peoples, social policy, education and the environment.

European Parliament representatives at the meeting will include JPC Co- President, Phillipe Monfils, First Vice-President, Mechtild Rothe, leader of the Socialist Group in the European Parliament, Pauline Green and Euro- MP's Jan Willem Bertens, Francoise Grossetete, and Helena Vaz Da Silva.

Representing the House will be House Co-President, Tassos Papadopoulos, First Vice-President Nicos Anastasiades, Second Vice-President, Andreas Christou and MP's George Vassiliou, Yiannakis Omirou, Katerina Pantelidou and others.

The Dutch Presidency of the European Council will be represented by Ambassador J.M.V.A. Count de Marchant et d'Ansembour, the European Commission by the head of the Commission in Cyprus, Ambassador Gilles Anouil and the Cyprus government by Foreign Minister Alecos Michaelides.

Also present at the meeting will be Special Representative of the Presidency-in-Office of the Council of the EU on Cyprus, Kester Heaslip.

JPC members will be received on March 17 by President of the Republic, Glafcos Clerides who will update them on the latest developments on the Cyprus issue.

[02] Nicosia to host next Orthodox assembly

Delegates at the conference, concluded last Thursday in Athens, officially accepted an invitation by the House of Representatives to hold the Orthodox Assembly's next meeting in Nicosia on May 8-9.

Deputy Doros Theodorou, who headed the Cypriot delegation at the two- day conference, took part in the Assembly's Financial Committee meeting where the main issue of discussion was the setting up of the body's the budget.

[03] House President visits London

In statements made this morning, Kyprianou said he will meet with the Speaker of the House of Commons and with Labour Party leaders.

He did not exclude the possibility of holding contacts with Foreign Office officials or British envoy for Cyprus, Sir David Hannay.

"Our effort is to present the right picture and ensure that whichever government takes power in the upcoming general elections in Britain, deals with the Cyprus problem correctly," Kyprianou said.

The House President noted Britain "must see the necessity that Turkey should abandon its expansionist policy so that a sensible solution may be found to the Cyprus problem".

"Otherwise," he stressed, "there will be no solution."

Kyprianou expressed fears that many of the recent actions taken by foreign governments and others aim to facilitate Turkey's relations with the European Union (EU).

He underscored this is going on "irrespective of what a solution to the Cyprus issue contains".

The House President reiterated that his concerns regarding efforts to instigate direct negotiations between the two communities on the island have not subsided and that we should not already anticipate their conclusion before they have even begun.

He said however, he supports direct negotiations as long as they follow a correct path.

Kyprianou will address the House of Commons next Wednesday, and a Cypriot Community gathering the following day.

He returns to Cyprus on Saturday, 22 March.
