1400:CYPPRESS:01[01] Protests against British exercises in AkamasNicosia, Jan 26 (CNA) -- Members of the House of Representatives, environmentalists and residents of the environmentally fragile Akamas region, in the western end of this Mediterranean island, are protesting today against military exercises to be performed by British Bases troops in the area.More than one hundred people gathered today and planted trees in the area, where British military exercises are scheduled to begin tomorrow and last until the end of the month. The protestors also handed a petition to the Episkopi Military Base, asking for an end to exercises in Akamas which as proposed by international environmentalist organisations should be turned into a national park. President of the Parliamentary Committee for the Environment, Demetris Eliades and MPs, Marios Matsakis, Yiannakis Omirou, Nicos Pittokopitis and George Hadgigeorgiou were also present and addressed the protestors, expressing their opposition to the performance of military exercises in the region. A number of environmentalists will tonight camp at the site where the British military exercise is scheduled to begin tomorrow. The Parliamentary Committee for the Environment urged last week the government to take immediate measures to stop the military exercises, citing the environmental peculiarity of the region and called upon House President Spyros Kyprianou to lodge objections to the exercises with various international bodies.
