[01] U.S. concerned about Cyprus says Albright

Washington, 25 Jan (CNA) -- New US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright expressed, in her first official press conference, concern over the Cyprus problem, which she described as a ''long-running dispute''.

Responding to a question regarding European security and stability, Albright said the US is ''also very concerned about Cyprus and the whole set of issues that go with that, and we believe we have some opportunities this year to improve that unfortunately long-running dispute.''

According to State Department analysts the fact that the new Secretary of State mentioned Cyprus in her answer to this specific question about European security points to the fact that the Cyprus problem is on a high position in the US foreign policy agenda.

Meanwhile on January 28, Hans Van Mierlo, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the Netherlands, which currently holds the European Union (EU) and Presidency and European Commission Vice President Sir Leon Brittan, will be in Washington for the first official meeting with the newly appointed Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

According to the official announcement by the EU Delegation in Washington one of the main items on the agenda of the meeting will be the Cyprus issue.

[02] Turkish warships sail to Famagusta

Nicosia, Jan 25 (CNA) -- Three warships sailed today from Turkey to the Turkish occupied port of Famagusta on the eastern coast of this Mediterranean island.

According to the Turkish Cypriot press, Turkish defence Minister, Turhan Tayan claimed this is a ''peaceful visit'', while Turkish Cypriot daily ''Kibris'' says the visit is an answer to Greek Cypriot armaments.

The Turkish warships will remain in the occupied Famagusta port until Wednesday, January 29.

Turkish high ranking officials, including President Suleyman Demirel and Foreign Minister Tansu Ciller have recently expressed threats against Cyprus after the government concluded an agreement for the purchase of Russian anti-aircraft missiles S-300.

Turkey invaded the island in 1974 and still occupies 37 per cent of its territory.
