[01] We wish for a united Cyprus to join the EU, says Michaelides

Nicosia, Nov 3 (CNA) -- Foreign Minister Alecos Michaelides expressed the wish that Cyprus will proceed as a united island to its accesion to the European Union (EU).

''We wish for the Cyprus people as a whole and the island as a united country to join the EU'', Michaelides said, stressing the need for the withdrawal of Turkish occupation troops and the removal of Turkish settlers.

Michaelides also noted that the period between now and the start of accession talks is the best time for a solution to the Cyprus and called all those with influence to assist efforts for a settlement.

Describing US involvement in such efforts as ''substantial'' and noting the interest shown by Britain, EU member states and Russia in the Cyprus problem, Michaelides noted that negotiations aimed at reaching common ground between Greek and Turkish Cypriots will start soon.

Expressing the hope that such negotiations will be completed by early 1997, Michaelides added that intensive and substantial direct talks aiming at a comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem will follow.
