    [02] President briefs National Council

Nicosia, Nov 1 (CNA) -- President Glafcos Clerides briefed today parliamentary party leaders on the contacts he has had recently on the Cyprus question, Government Spokesman Yiannakis Cassoulides said.

Speaking to the press, Cassoulides said ''the President briefed party leaders about his discussions with Britain's representative for Cyprus Sir David Hannay (who visited the island earlier this month) and about developments on UN efforts to start a military dialogue between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides.''

Party leaders, who make up the National Council, the top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus problem, will meet again on 13 November to outline their positions and exchange views.

The President, Cassoulides said, informed party leaders about the content of a memorandum he is preparing to the Greek government, which includes the President's assessment of the British and American views on the Cyprus problem.

''Next week's visit by Greece's Deputy Foreign Minister Christos Rozakis will offer the opportunity to draft out a strategy on future talks,'' Cassoulides said.

Replying to questions, the Spokesman said UN proposal relating to the military talks have not been rejected and noted ''we are beginning talks on the gist of the matter and will look into the UN proposal as well as submit our own counter-proposals.''

The Spokesman said President Clerides will consult party leaders on issues pertaining the military dialogue, which according to the UN should conclude an agreement on extending the unmanning of army posts in close proximity, on the removal of weapons and define the code of conduct of the military along the cease-fire line.

Turkish troops have been occupying 37 per cent of Cyprus territory since 1974, in violation of repeated UN resolutions calling for their withdrawal.
