[02] Greek Premier to attend funeral, National Council session

According to Acting Government Spokesman Spyros Arotis, Simitis had a telephone conversation today with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides, a few hours after the killing of the second Greek Cypriot youth, in three days.

Arotis said the Greek Premier will pay a visit to Cyprus on Saturday to be briefed and to attend, the same day, a meeting of the island's National Council, the top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus problem.

Meanwhile, the Athens News Agency reported from Athens that Simitis will attend the funeral of 26-year-old Solomos Spyrou Solomos, who was killed today by Turkish soldiers while demonstrating peacefully in the UN-controlled buffer zone.

The agency quoted Simitis as stating that the new criminal action by the occupation forces is ''an unprecedented provocation for the international community, international organisations and free citizens''.

He said the way in which ''unarmed demonstrators are being confronted by military forces, show that the pillars of Attila (Turks) are common criminals.''

''We shall continue to undertake all the necessary initiatives to put an end to the Cyprus drama'', the Greek Premier added.

Expressing his sorrow and outrage over the Turkish brutality, Simitis expressed his sympathy to the family of the new victim, Solomos Spyros Solomos.

Last Sunday, the Turks killed in the same area Solomos' relative, 24-year-old Tasos Isaac, who was buried shortly before the second killing took place.

More than ten people, including two British UN Peace-keepers were injured from bullets fired indiscriminately by the Turkish troops.

Greece's National Defence Minister Gerasimos Arsenis was following developments from his ministry in Athens and was in constant touch with President Glafcos Clerides and his Cypriot counterpart Costas Eliades.

A refugee from Famagusta and former Paralimni resident, Solomos, 26, is said to be a relative of Isaac, savagely killed three days ago by Turkish extremists.

Solomos was cold bloodily shot by Turkish soldiers as he was trying to remove the flag of the Turkish Cypriot regime.

The incidents in the buffer zone have been described as the worst since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

They coincided with the anniversary of the second phase of the Turkish invasion. During this phase the Turkish troops occupied Famagusta, once a flourishing coastal tourist resort, which borders Dherynia, where the two men were killed.
