[01] SERBIAN GOVERNMENT CALLS FOR RECOGNITION OF ELECTION RESULTS IN NISThe Serbian Government expects the Election Commission in Nis to repeal its decision on repeating the vote in 17 precincts and determine the result of the elections, said a statement issued by the Information Ministry on Wednesday.The Government examined in Wednesday's session the findings of the Justice Ministry, at the order of Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic, to the effect that the truth be established regarding the municipal elections in Nis and the public duly informed. The Justice Ministry had established that the Zajedno coalition had carried off 37 seats, the Socialist Party of Serbia 32 and the Serbian Radical Party one seat in the Municipal Assembly of Nis, southeastern Serbia. The statement said the conditions for determining the final results in all the election precincts were met, following procedures by election organs and competent courts. The Government ordered the Justice Ministry to take measures to establish accountability for those responsible for the irregularities. It said the above showed that problems, omissions, errors and abuses could be resolved efficiently only in the institutions of the system, because everything that had been resolved regarding the local elections, had been done so in legal institutions, not in the street. The Serbian Government, consisting of a socialist majority, functions in the interest of all citizens. Whatever irregularities are established, regardless of protests, will be set right in line with regulations and in legal institutions, said the statement. Belgian Ambassador to Yugoslavia Jan Matthysen and head of the U.N. office in Belgrade Julijan Harston also attended the talks, the statement said. The meeting, due to close on Saturday, is chaired by U.S. lawyer Roberts Owen. The first session will provide an opportunity for the interested parties to submit evidence to an arbitration commission made up of Owen, representing the international community, Cazim Sadikovic from the Muslim-Croat Federation and Vitomir Popovic of Republika Srpska. Bosnian Serb leaders insist that Brcko remain in Republika Srpska, as the town is of vital importance for the Serbs in Bosnia, being situated in the narrowest part of the corridor linking western and eastern Republika Srpska on one side, to Yugoslavia on the other.
