At the press conference for foreign journalists Deputy Prime Minister of
the Federal Government Nikola Sainovic and Deputy Minister of Foreign
Affairs Zivadin Jovanovic, stated that the recent visit to our country of
the delegation of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe
(O.S.C.E.) headed by Felippe Gonzales, is the confirmation of the strives
of Yugoslavia to establish with the international community as good
relations as possible. At the same time, they have pointed out that
Gonzales himself in Belgrade stated that the O.S.C.E. representatives did
not come to Yugoslavia either to mediate or to arbitrate in the actual
political events. "During the Yugoslav crisis", said Sainovic, "we were
witnesses that foreign representatives who were arriving in Yugoslavia,
under the pressure of different centers of power often were changing their
opinion in view of what they have really seen on the ground, but we hope
that this time it will not be so". Jovanovic recalled that the O.S.C.E.
delegation visited Belgrade in order to see for itself on the spot the
truthful facts about the situation in our country and in this way help in
correcting the deformed picture and stands in one part of the international
community. The idea of the initiative of the Federal Government was for
this delegation to contribute towards normalization of the relations
between Yugoslavia and the international community, underlined Jovanovic.

[02] PRODUCTION OF ARMAMENT IN BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA
Members of the stabilization forces (SFOR) in one of their first actions in
Bosnia, confiscated a few days ago 11 missile launchers in the factory for
production of heavy artillery armament "Bratstvo" in Novi Travnik. In this
way SFOR only completed the action of IFOR which warned the director of the
factory that the missile launchers must be within 30 days removed into the
storage under the NATO supervision, but this was not done. Under the
provisions of the Peace Accords, the federal partners in Bosnia-Herzegovina
have agreed to reduce the number of tanks, armored transporters, aircraft,
helicopters and heavy mortar launchers within the agreed limits, which is
one of the confidence building measures in Bosnia-Herzegovina after the
blood-spilling civil war. Members of the multinational peace forces,
however, very often are discovering armament there where it should not be
found, and even the entire warehouses of arms. The mention in the latest
news of Associated Press of the "Bratstvo" armament factory shows that this,
until the Nineties, elite military factory of the former Socialist Federal
Republic of Yugoslavia, has succeeded now with the foreign assistance, in
renewing its production. This news has caused great anxiety of all those
who are really devoted to peace in Bosnia. Just how serious this
information is, may be best perceived from the facts published in the
specialized American military magazine "Science Intelligence Review", that
the Bosnian military enterprises have already signed first contracts with
Croatia on production of cannon tubes and cassette bombs. The same source
states that Bosnian export potential "is promising an interesting future"
in the countries such as Pakistan and Iran. This is a suggestion as to what
the owners of the new military industry will do with their eventual
production. The magazine is also stating that during the civil war in
Bosnia Muslims in Tuzla were producing grenades and were filling them with
poisonous gas yperite, and there are also serious warnings that in the same
way fasogen is being used.

[03] INCIDENTS DURING CELEBRATION OF THE CATHOLIC CHRISTMAS
Celebration of the Catholic Christmas in Sarajevo, Mostar and Zenica did
not take place in peace and tolerance, as is becoming for this holiday, but
numerous incidents have been recorded, the Muslim media reported yesterday.
In the Sarajevo cathedral, during the officiation of the traditional
midnight Christmas mass, tear gas was thrown and fist fighting caused. In
the area of Zenica, Croat media report, Muslims have destroyed or removed
all the decorated Christmas trees placed in front of the Croat cultural,
educational and religious buildings. In the first hours of the night of
Christmas celebration, a beginning of a rafal fire was registered from all
types of infantry armament from the western part of Mostar towards the
eastern Muslim part of town.

[04] TURKEY DOES NOT RECOGNIZE ANY 'REPUBLIC OF KOSOVO'
Turkey officially announced that "there is no possibility for activities in
this country of the representative offices of the alleged republic of
Kosovo". In Ankara it is also officially stated that Turkey does not
recognize the alleged republic of Kosovo, because it is a territory which
is the part of the sovereign state of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
The reason for this official Turkish reaction were the false information
about the recently opened allegedly official representative offices of the
republic of Kosovo in Istanbul. At the "opening", anyhow, no Turkish
officials were present and neither the representatives of the diplomatic
missions in Turkey. Those present were mostly members of the societies of
Albanians in that country.

[05] RAILWAY COMPANY - ZTP 'BELGRADE' TRANSPORTED 24 MILLION
PASSENGERS
Railway Transport Company "Belgrade" transported during the year 1996 24
million passengers and nine million tons of cargo, which is an increase in
the volume of work of 30 percent in respect to the previous year, stated
yesterday at the press conference director general of this company Zivorad
Maksimovic. He also said that transport of goods in the international
traffic was increased over six times. Railway Company - ZTP "Belgrade"
during this year renewed its rolling stock, purchased 120 new wagon
carriages from Germany, 15 locomotives from Romania, two manoeuvering units
from Hungary and 11 diesel-locomotives from Bulgaria. It also contracted
with "Gosa" a delivery very soon of 16 most modern railway carriages. After
the lifting of sanctions a number of deals have been made with the foreign
partners, the most important of them being the contract concluded with the
French firm "Valdino" in the value of 80 million DEM.

[06] FEDERAL INSTITUTE FOR STATISTICS ON ECONOMIC TRENDS IN THE YEAR

The total this year's growth of social product amounts to 5.8 percent,
industrial production has grown in respect to the last year's one for 8
percent, prices are higher for 58.8 percent, where the major part of raise
in costs occurred during the first half of the year. This was announced at
the annual conference of the Federal Institute for Statistics. "It is the
third year in a row that we are having growth of the social product, and if
during the first quarter of the next year the status of our country is
regulated in the international financial institutions, there are conditions
for the year 1997 to mark the economic growth of 13 percent", said the
Director of the Institute Milovan Zivkovic. This year's inflation, with the
exception of the extraordinary year 1993, is the lowest one for the past
ten years, stated the experts at the conference.
