  • [01] Celebrations in honor of the Romanian army

    For three days festivities are taking place all over Romania, in all garrisons, honoring the army of our country, as it was on 25 October 1944 that the army of Romania freed the last piece of land occupied by the German Wehrmacht. On this occasion, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI notes, the order of the Romanian National Defense Minister will be read out in all garrisons, memorials are to be held at all moments and graveyards where heroes are buried. It is also on 25 October that the newest batch of soldiers and students of army schools and higher education establishments is sworn in. On the Day of the Romanian army the festivities in Bucharest include memorials and celebrations including laying of wreaths of flowers at the memorial of the Unknown Hero fallen for the glory of the homeland in the Great War for the Independence and Freedom of United Romania in 1916 -- 1918.

    [02] The Chairman of the Committee for Defense of the Chamber of Deputies about Romania's NATO integration

    Ioan Mircea Pascu who is the chairman of the Committee for Defense of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of Romania held a press conference on Monday in which he made a number of assumptions about Romania's access to NATO structures. He first specified that he spoke on his own behalf and then he referred to the necessity of cutting down on the number of objectives so that financing is possible.

    [03] Bucharest reactions to the statement of Gunther Verheugen

    The Commissioner for expansion of the European Union Mr. Gunther Verheugen said that of all candidates to adherence it is Romania and Bulgaria which probably will not be ready to be received in the European Union in 2005. Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu said Romania set itself the task to adhere by 2007 and that the delay can be made up for. Foreign Minister Petre Roman said in his turn that , we quote " this year was rich in promises of the international community but, on the other hand, full of dissapointment ". He added that Romania did not fulfill its promises regarding economic reform.

    [04] Auschnit visits Resita

    Son of former owner of Resita steel works and metal processing top producing unit of Romania in the inter-war interval Steven Auschnit has made a private visit to Resita. NOBLE VENTURES is the owner of the Resita works following privatization and Steven, son of Max Auschnit, said he agreed to be the manager of the works in an attempt to make Resita again become one of the top ranking units of Europe.

    [05] Press Conference of the President of the ALPHA Trade Union Federation

    Bogdan Hossu held a press conference yesterday in which he said the decision made last week by the Cabinet of Romania to privatize a number of companies working in the metallurgical and steel producing sectors simply cancels strategy of restructuring which was finalized alongside European Union experts. The Trade Union leader also said that the afore mentioned decision would lead to the conclusion that this programme is not wanted by certain groups that wish for a gap in the strategy in this field which also leads to dismissals of about 10,000 - 12,000 people in the following three months. Mr. Hossu added he hoped the decision made would be altered as, otherwise, trade union struggle ensues which could end up in general strike and blocking of roads, informs RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.

    [06] Tension in the Jiu Valley coal field

    The council of coordination of the League of Miners Trade Unions of the Jiu Valley met in a special session and decided that 1 November is the deadline for solving demands of the miners by the Employers Brown Coal Union. The miners are asking for a 40 per cent increase of salaries, renunciation to applying taxes to certain benefits which the miners are getting as well as the increase of the allowances for food. The interim Chairman of the Miners' League does not exclude the possibility of a work conflict in the Jiu Valley.

    [07] General strike at SC RULMENTI of the town of Slatina

    All the employees of SC RULMENTI of the town of Slatina have gone on strike for an unlimited period of time as they are unhappy with working conditions, salaries and non observance of the collective labor contract. There are close to 800 people on strike which was declared as being legal by the local Court of Law.

    [08] CALENDAR

    The President of Romania receives today the school students who obtained awards at national and international contests and olympiads. As part of a separate ceremony the President of Romania gives higher ranks to army officers and to other military officers of the structures belonging to the Home Ministry, the Romanian Information Service, the Protection Service of this country and the Special Telecommunications Service.

    The vice-president of the Chamber of Deputies of the Romanian Parliament Andrei Chiliman receives a Dutch delegation led by A.H. Khortals, Justice Minister, now on a visit to Romania.

    Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu makes a working visit to county Botosani and to county Suceva which are situated in the North Eastern area of Romania.

    State minister, minister of Justice, Valeriu Stoica and the Hungarian minister of Justice Mrs. Ibolya David are attending at Targu Mures the Romanian - Hungarian seminar on the theme EFFECTS OF EUROPEAN JURISPRUDENCE OF HUMAN RIGHTS ON HOME LEGISLATION AT Hotel Continental. Then they go to Sovata to attend the opening of the training center for magistrates and the Rest and Recreation Home for magistrates of the same locality.

    United States Ambassador to Romania James Rosapepe is opening the seminar financed by the United States regarding ways and means by which the Cabinet of Romania may speed up the process of developing the private sector.

    Romanian embassy to Helsinki is organizing the exhibition 80 YEARS OF ROMANIAN FINNISH RELATIONS.

    Romania is participating in the International Tourism Fair - Travel Trade Workshop - of Montreaux in Switzerland starting today.
