  • [01] Statement of President Emil Constantinescu at the end of the exercise FORCE 2000

    The President of Romania attended the military exercise FORCE 2000 at the shooting ground Cincu in county Brasov at the end of which he declared that this exercise marks the successful end of the first stage of reform of the Romanian army and also maps out its programme of development by the year 2005. President Constantinescu also said that the exercise must be judged in the context of the efforts made in the last four years for the building up of an army of professionals who are endowed at the highest world standards. The President of Romania also stressed the actions of integrating Romania within NATO adding that the SOCAT programme was ended successfully as an expression of the good collaboration of the Romanian defense industry with the most performing foreign companies in the domain.

    [02] Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu participated in the seminar ROMANIAN INVESTMENTS, STABILITY AND CONTINUITY OF THE ROMANIAN ECONOMY

    In the address delivered on Wednesday opening the debates of the seminar ROMANIAN INVESTMENTS, STABILITY AND CONTINUITY OF THE ROMANIAN ECONOMY, a seminar which unfolds here in Bucharest, Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu made a short presentation of the Romanian economy. At the chapter dealing with achievements the premier mentioned the economic increase registered during the first semester of the year equal to 2.1 per cent as well as the boost of exports by 24 per cent. The Prime Minister was quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI saying that until now the population of this country did not feel any effect of these increases, living standards wise.

    [03] Ministry of Finance took over responsibilities of coordinating programmes with the World Bank

    Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu signed the documents which authorize the Ministry of Finance of Romania by secretary of state Sebastian Vladescu with the carrying out of the PSAL programme as well as of the programme for the institutional adjustment of the private sector.In this way the minister of transports no longer guides implementation of programmes which are enforced together with the World Bank.

    [04] Loan for imports of natural gas and black crude

    According to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI City Bank was authorized by the Ministry of Finance to arrange sindicated loan to Romania worth two hundred million USD to finance imports of natural gas, black crude and crude for this year and for replenishing stocks for the interval 2000 - 2001.

    [05] Romanian doctrine does not allow aggression against any country - says president Emil Constantinescu

    The president of Romania, Emil Constantinescu, said that the doctrine of Romania does not allow for aggression against any country. The statement is a response to the declaration of the Yugoslav minister of information Goran Matic according to whom the military exercises in Romania at present are nothing else but a section of a plan of Washington to remove president Milosevici from power if he wins elections on Sunday.

    In point of fact the exercises have already come to an end and the drills near Brasov under the code name FORCE 2000 involve military of Romania only. The President of Romania also said that total transparency is what is characterizing the preparation of the army of Romania that is being trained according to modern principles.

    [06] Round table on the theme of start of negociations of adherence of Romania to the European Union

    The start of negociations of adherence of Romania to the European Union - a chance and a challenge for the liberals - this has been the theme of the round table organized at the FRIEDRICH NAUMANN foundation. The talks were carried out by representatives of the Liberal group in the West German parliament and by leaders of the Romanian National Liberal Party. Valeriu Stoica who is the first vicechairman of PNL said that adherence to the European Union asks for reforms of the Romanian economy as well as reforms at the level of the European Union. Mr. Hasoti who is a member of the Parliamentary Committee for European Union integration said that mention should be made of the efforts of RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI which is the main channel of the ROMANIAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION to make the listeners familiar with the process of integration by specific programmes and features.

    [07] The meeting of the defense ministers of the countries that wish to join NATO takes place in Sofia, Bulgaria

    Defense ministers of the countries running for NATO membership - Albania, Bulgaria, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Macedonia, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia are meeting in Sofia, Bulgaria. Also present is the NATO secretary general Goerge Robertson, announced on Wednesday the Bulgarian deputy defense minister Velisar Salamanov. AFP which is quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI adds that invited to attend are also the three defense ministers of the countries that recently joined NATO - Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

    [08] United States Ambassador Rosapepe is visiting county Gorj

    United States Ambassador James Rosapepe is now on a visit to county Gorj and he had a meeting with the people living in the village Baia de Fier. The talks highlighted the opportunity opened to the young people living there to go and visit the United States provided they speak English so that that could become better acquainted with American reality.

    The tour of the United States Ambassador also includes the town of Targu Jiu with TOPI GLASS company as main host, economy of the town wise, and the prefecture of the area.

    Mr. Rosapepe then goes to Motru for a dialog with the miners there.

    Chairman of the Senate Mircea Ionescu - Quintus is receiving today the delegation of the Liberal Group in the German Bundestag; the foreign minister of the Czech Republic Jan Kavan and then the West German parliamentary delegation led by Peter Schuler, vicechairman of the Parliament of Renanien Palatinat.

    The chairman of the Chamber of Deputies Ion Diaconescu is receiving the German parliamentary delegation led by Peter Schuler, vicechairman of the Parliament of Renanien Palatinat who then meet with the members of the Commission for foreign relations of the Chamber of Deputies and with the members of the parliamentary group of friendship Romania - Germany of the Parliament of Romania.

    The vicechairman of the Chamber of Deputies Adrian Nastase launches his new book entitled BATTLE FOR THE FUTURE at the Dimitrie Cantemir University.

    The Cabinet meets in its weekly session today.

    Romanian foreign minister Petre Roman receives today the foreign minister of the Czech Republic Jan Kavan.

    As part of the multinational exercise BLACK SEA PARTNERSHIP 2000 which unfolds this week in Turkey the VIP Day is today with the participation of the deputy Head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Victor Aurel Blidea.

    The Academy of Romania invites all those interested to attend the reception address of Professor Thierry de Montbrial, founding director of the French Institut of International Relations, honorary member of the Academy of Romania on the theme LE SENS DE L'HISTOIRE. Professor De Montbrial will then have a press conference.

    As part of the festival BRITAIN IN ROMANIA the Theater Company A and B C presents in the town of Iasi the show THE TEMPEST by Shakespeare.

    Romania is participating in the tourism fair of Deauville, France.
