  • [01] President Emil Constantinescu has left for Sydney, Australia

    The President of Romania will watch some of the finals in which Romanian sportsmen and sportswomen are competing on Sunday and Monday and on Saturday he is the guest of the Home of Romanian Olympics and meets with our sports representatives and with the media. Mr. Constantinescu will also meet with Australian officials and with local businessmen while on Monday, after watching some of the finals the finals, he leaves for Thailand for an official two day visit.

    [02] The Cabinet of Romania signed an accord with the United States for education and scientific exchanges under the Fulbright Commission

    According to a communique from the Cabinet of Romania, after mention is made of the fact that the Government of Bucharest approved the signing of this accord with the United States, the US Embassy here in Bucharest announced the Foreign Ministry of Romania that the Bureau for International Relations approved financing by two hundred thousand USD for a Romanian programme regarding narcotic substances. The money is to be used for implementing a programme aimed at cutting down transnational crime.

    [03] Normative documents adopted by the Cabinet of Romania

    The Government of Romania released a decree following which each town hall has the authority to regulate public transportation. In this way state subsidies for public transportation are terminated and all matters related to public transports are settled locally. At the same time the Cabinet of Bucharest ratified the accord between Romania and Bulgaria which is aimed at the building of the rail-road and motorway bridge over the river Danube in the area Calafat - Vidin.

    [04] Press Conference on Eurobonds at the Ministry of Finance of Romania

    The release of Eurobonds which was innitially planned to be worth 100 million USD went up to 150 million USD reads the communique of the Finance Ministry of Romania as the issue of Eurobonds was planned at a very favorable moment. The banks that support the issue are Deutsche Bank with more than half the amount, Alpha Bank and the National Bank of Greece as well as Demir Bank of Turkey for which this action related to Eurobonds is a first. The transaction comes to an end on 6 October says Cristian Popa who is vicegovernor of the National Bank of Romania.

    [05] The Czech Republic actively supports Romania to become a NATO member

    The foreign minister of the Czech Republic that made a visit to Bucharest said that his country was and would be supporting actively Romania to become a NATO member. Mr. Jan Kavan said he hoped concrete steps would be made at the NATO summit of 2002. On the other hand the head of Czech diplomacy said that companies of his country were interested in the process of privatization of Romania and he gave the example of the SKODA plants.

    [06] German parliamentary delegation is on a visit to Romania

    German parliamentary delegation that is now on a visit to Romania met with the Chairman of the Chamber of Deputies, Ion Diaconescu and with the members of the Committee for foreign relations and those of the Parliamentary group for friendship Romania - Germany. The head of the delegation, Peter Schuler, stood for renunciation to visa obligation for the Romanian citizens but however added that due to the Schengen system the German side would try to get this facility for some categories of Romanian citizens at first.

    The German parliamentary delegation also met with the Chairman of the Romanian Senate Mircea Ionescu-Quintus and with the members of the Committee for Foreign Policy of the Senate.

    [07] US Ambassador James Rosapepe visited the Iron Gates Hydro Power Station on the Danube

    Mr. Rosapepe visited the biggest hydropower station of Romania on the river Danube at the Iron Gates in county Mehedinti. The guest learned of the history of the building of this hydropower station and all the details linked to re-newing activity now.

    [08] Turkish businessmen were received by President Emil Constantinescu

    The President of Romania received a delegation of Turkish businessmen, members of the Association of Turkish Businessmen of Romania. As is known the President of Romania had invited Turkish investors to be present in the top sectors of the industry of this country, namely in power producing and in agriculture. Among other things the Turkish businessmen underlined the favorable climate existing in the economy of Romania and the fact that this country is the most important economic partner of Turkey in the Balkans, reported RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.

    [09] CALENDAR

    The President of Romania left last night for Sydney for three days in order to be present at a number of final contests in which qualified were Romanian sportsmen and sportswomen. President Emil Constantinescu will also meet with officials of the host country and with local businessmen as well as with representatives of the Romanian local community.

    The Romanian foreign minister Petre Roman will have official talks with his Portuguese opposite number Jaime Jose Matos da Gama now on a visit to Romania.

    The town of Botosani hosts the meeting sanctioning the setting up of the Euroregion PRUTUL DE SUS made up of counties of Romania, Republic of Moldova and the Ukraine.

    The military unit at Someseni near Cluj is hosting the ceremony of conclusion of the military exercise COOPERATIVE BEST EFFORT 2000 in the presence of representatives of local authorities, military attachees to our country and Romanian army officers.

    Conclusion today of FORCE 2000 which unfolded at Harsova, near Constanta in the interval 19 - 22 September.

    Opening of the BACAU international airport with regular flights to six towns of Northern Italy namely Reviso, Bologna, Bergamo, Florence, Trieste and Verona.

    Romanian born American poetess Petra Vlah launches three volumes today CAPE OF GOOD HOPE, SLUMS AT DAYBREAK, ENDLESS EYES as well as the collection of interviews under the title MOST IMPORTANT MEETINGS. The cermony takes place at Casa Scriitorilor, Sala Oglinzilor, which is a traditional place where books are launched by Bucharest writers.
