[02] Theodor Stolojan announced his candidacy to the office of President of Romania

Former Prime Minister Theodor Stolojan announced his candidacy to the office of President of Romania on behalf of the National Liberal Party and motivated his decision by the very difficult situation of the country now. As part of a special press conference Mr. Stolojan also said the following four years are decisive for doing away with inefficiency of the political structure, with economic inefficiency and with corruption. According to his opinion if these issues are not solved Romania would fail European integration and will lag behind for a long time. In an interview to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI Mr. Stolojan added that PNL wishes to have good relations of collaboration with PNTCD - Christian Democratic National Peasants Party - but the party decided to have its own candidates on its own lists for the elections in the fall. First vice-president of PNL, Valeriu Stoica, said as part of an interview to the same radio station that the option of Mr. Stolojan for the National Libe! ral Party and for the candidacy are the result of a long process of thinking. Mr. Stoica expressed his belief that the National Liberal Party is the vector of a powerful center right wing coalition in Romania.

[03] New center right wing coalition

PNTCD, UFD and FER signed a protocol on Monday which constitutes the basis of a center right wing coalition which is called CDR 2000 - Conventia Democratica Romana 2000. In the future elections in the fall CDR 2000 will have one candidate to the presidency of Romania and will have joint lists of candidates for the Parliament of the country. Logo for the elections is the same for the three parties - Christian Democratic National Peasants Party, Union of Right Wing Forces and Federation of Romanian Ecologists.

[04] Statement of PNTCD leader Ion Diaconescu

After talks with the Prime Minister of the Cabinet of Bucharest Mugur Isarescu the president of PNTCD Ion Diaconescu said the meetings and talks would continue adding that they were aimed at making Mugur Isarescu be a runner for the office of president of Romania in the fall representing PNTCD and the allies of this party.

The first vicepresident of the National Liberal Party Valeriu Stoica said his party and the other parties siding with PNL have decided to support Mugur Isarescu continue in office as Prime Minister after the elections as well.

[05] PDSR - Social Democracy Party of Romania - leader Ion Iliescu about the decision of Theodor Stolojan to run for presidency

Mr. Ion Iliescu is of the opinion that the decision of Theodor Stolojan to run for presidency on behalf of PNL demonstrates that the parties representing the incumbent power do not have any personality to promote as candidates for the supreme state office. Mr. Iliescu also noted that Mr. Stolojan had said he was motivated by poverty in this country and that was also the result, said Mr. Iliescu, of the policy of PNL which is one of the ruling parties.

    [06] ECONOMIC NEWS

[07] Standard and Poor's changes attitude, note counselors of the Romanian Prime Minister

According to chief counselor Adrian Vasilescu the improvement of the rating granted by Standard and Poor's to Romania is due to the fact that at last the agency has noted the economic progress scored by Romania a fact which made the agency alter the rating of Romania from negative to stable.
