  • [01] Lower infantile death rates in Malesi e Madhe

KOPLIK, Sept. 27 (ata) - By M Malja: The infantile death rate for January-August this year in the district of Malesi e Madhe is 5 per thousand lower than compared with the previous year, said on Sunday the specialist of the Health Department of the district, Agim Kurti.

Hence, from 25 deaths per thousand of the index in 1998, for the first eight month period of this year, the figure fell to 20 per thousand. Kurti added that the positive result has been also influenced by the extension of the medical service throughout the district and the higher professional level of the medical staff, thanks to the qualification programs held with the aid of PHARE program, UNICEF and the Albanian Red Cross.

During this year, six health centres have been built or reconstructed with state budgetary funds, and with 150 thousand dollars by the World Bank 10 health centres have been constructed or rehabilitated. /xh/

TIRANE, Sept. 27 (ata) - By Ardi Pulaj: "Life Train" carrying humanitarian aid for Kosove, having made the long itinerary London, Berlin, Prague, Bratislava, Budapest, Bucharest, Sofia, Salonica, Skopje, was expected to arrive in Fushe Kosove on Sunday.

"It is the first time that the train, with the initiative of British railway workers, goes directly from Britain to Kosove, crossing a distance of about 4 5000 km," Kosova Press reports.

The train with three locomotives is loaded with aid for schools and items for the coming winter, which will be distributed in Kosova according to the U.N. plan.

The project is supported by UNHCR, KFOR and about 300 non-governmental organizations, which want to use the railway as the most reliable and efficient way for the winter period.

The project is considered great and may be compared only with two projects in the past, when the British transported their troops to the front during the World War First and supplied Berlin through the air, when the Russians had cut relations with that city following World War Two. /lh/xh/

[16] Serb defence force, provocation against Albanians and international community

TIRANE, Sept 27 (ATA)- By I. Luto, The Albanian Foreing Ministry on Monday considered the Serb leaders' declarations for the creation of a defence force of the Kosova Serbs a "provocation against the Albanians of Kosova and the International Community".

Albanian Deputy Foreing Minister Pellumb Xhufi told a news conference that the Albanian government flatly rejects the creation of a parallel force with the Kosova Protection Corps.

"There is no reason to create such an organisation, as the creation of the "Kosova Protection Corps" marked the demilitarization of Kosova Liberation Army and this contingent is planned to be composed of members of all nationalities in Kosova, Serbs included."

Referring to one of the round tables under the Stability Pact, due within October 20 in Budapest, where Serbian mayors in oppostion with Milosevic are expected to participate, Xhufi said that "however we feel sceptical about Serbia democratisation process as no opposition politician in Serbia has condemned Belgrade's massacres in Kosova". /led/so/lm/
