  • [01] Ten Albanians killed in Podujeve

    PRISHTINE, Dec 25 - ATA correspondent Behlul Jashari reported that 10 Albanians were killed during an offensive by Serb forces in Podujeve and its surroundings.

    The Human Right Council in Kosova informed that the victims included 9 civilians, two of whom children, and a soldier of the Kosova Liberation Army (KLA).

    There are also many wounded children. KLA sources said that four of its soldiers were wounded and one killed.

    KLA units in Podujeva, Llapi area, had strongly resisted to the Serbian offensive and caused heavy damages to the enemy destroying 8 tanks and other vehicles, KLA information office said.

    Sources on the ground said that the situation in Podujeva city and its surroundings was worse on Sunday night. Volleys of gunfire were audible from the Serb positions. /b.ca/ak/

    [02] Pojanaku 'stations' his poetry in Bucharest

    POGRADEC, Dec 26 (ATA) - Bucharest is the last poetic "station" for the Pogradec poet Dhimiter Pojanaku for 1998.

    His poetry toured the multicultural anthology of Rimini, Italy, in June 1998, the International Poetry Festival of Curtea de Arces in September '98 and the pan-national competition "The best poetry on Kosova' in Tetova during October '98, when he was awarded a prize.

    The bilingual European magazine "Haemus" published recently in Bucharest from Kopi and Ardian Kycyku, successfully closed the presentation of the new poetry of Pogradec with Pojanaku's in Rumanian.

    "Distinguished writers of my city, Lasgushi and Mitrushi, deserve this. Today's poetry of Pogradec occupies an honored place in Albanian and European poetry. I should do my best for this," Pojanaku, the wellknown representative of today's poetry of Pogradec and Albania, said. f.n/ak/

    [03] 40 million leks investments for regional civil hospital

    GJIROKASTER, Dec 25 (ATA) - By H.Cani: Some 40 million leks were invested during '98 to improve the premises and medical care in the hospital of Gjirokastra.

    The inauguration of a lifter worth 14 million leks for the first aid unit financed by the Ministry of Health is one of the investments in the hospital which covers the Southern region, Gjergji Bizhga, hospital director said to ATA.

    He also mentioned the rehabilitation of the hospital sewer worth 4 million leks, financed by Ministry of Health and the reconstruction of power line worth one million leks.

    Foreign organisations have given a special contribution to the improvement of hospital conditions. "CESVI" Italian non-government organisation invested for the modernisation of the units of the mother and child hospital an amount worth 20 million leks. /s.sh/pas/ak/

    [04] Shkodra worshippers celebrate Christmas

    SHKODER, Dec 25 (ATA) - By M. Malja: Shkodra is one of the cities where the religious holidays were celebrated even under dictatorship.

    Celebration of religious holidays continued though temples were destroyed, Cathedral Church, one of the most beautiful in the Balkans was also destroyed and honorable clergy were jailed and massacred. One of the biggest mosques in the Balkans was totally destroyed.

    It is evident that many religious books were burned down and the people experienced inquisition in the 20th century, but the city of an ancient culture kept the Bible and Curan and icons in their houses.

    The climate of Christmass prevailed in the city during all December with dozens and dozens of emigrants coming from abroad.

    Shops were decorated displaying goods and children toys and honest traders reduced prices to 10-30 percent.

    The Cultural Center of Children organised a concert on the day of Christmas. Prefect of Shkodra, Puke and Malesi e Madhe, deputies, and local officials were present at a mass organised in the city Cathedral. /pas/ak/

    [05] Explosion damages power line 220 kilovolt on Christmas day

    TIRANE, Dec.25 (ata) - A explosion last Thursday evening damaged completely the Fierze-Tirana electric line of 220 kilovolt.

    The general department of the Electric Distribution Corporation said in a report to ATA that at about 21.35 p.m. last Thursday some unidentified people had placed explosive in pillar No 240, whose blast damaged the electric line near village Borizane, Kruja district.

    This act has made that the other part of the 220 kilovolt system work with 20 % greater capacity, especially the the Koman-Vau i Dejes line, thus worsening the situation in the electric network. The blast has also brought about a considerable reduction of the electric tension, especially in Central and Southern Albania. /dast/xh/

    [06] Agriculture university opens new profiles

    TIRANA, Dec 26 (ATA) - By E. Xhajanka: Department of food and dairy production at the Agricultural University of Tirana has completed all the documentation needed to open two new profiles "Livestock business management" and "Fishing seafruits."

    The university council has approved the profiles and the Ministry of Education and Science is due to approve them.

    This University gives the diploma of the Agrarian Engineer in Zootechnics. New profiles result from total reconstruction of teaching plans and programs oriented by Western advanced models, particularly German school. /pas/ak/

    [07] Police remove kiosks in center of Tirana

    TIRANA, Dec 26 (ATA) - By M.Pupa: Construction police are destroying the illegal constructions at the Skenderbeg square, the center of Tirana, on Saturday.

    "An operation plan foresees the destruction of 26 kiosks," Proletar Roshi, director of Construction police, said to ATA.

    He said that the owners had been informed five days ago to remove them but nothing was done so far. Therefore, the police were engaged in their removal.

    The construction police have destroyed 180 concrete buildings during 1998 in Tirana. /ak/

    [08] Mines be rented at start of new year

    TIRANA, Dec 26 (ATA) - By M. Pupa: Albanian mines are going to be rented during the first three months of 1999.

    Seven permits have been given so far to use the chromium mine and this, according to specialists, shows that the private use of mines has given positive results.

    These mines have managed not only to produce and sell in the foreign market but also to the processing factories 12.000 tons of chromium. /pas/ak/

    [09] Let us turn Kalashnikov-s into guitars- Message of Saranda children on Christmas -

    SARANDA, Dec. 25 (ATA) - By Sh. Hajno: "Let us turn the Kalashnikov-s into guitars," was the message conveyed by the children of Saranda in the performance held on the occasion of Christmas in the cultural hall "Butrinti" of the town.

    The humor, the songs, the instrumental parts, played by the talented children of the Cultural Center of the town, mixed with the parodies and the play of the little and professional actors like Anastas Nika and Flamur Ruci, were part of the program of this spectacle.

    The activity of these children was attended by the local authorities of Saranda. /pas/mt/

    [10] Hundreds of Albanian young men study abroad

    TIRANA, Dec. 26 (ATA) - By P. Shuteriqi: Hundreds of Albanian young men study or are trained in different branches in the universities abroad, like in Europe or United States, according to a poll carried out by the Center for Economic and Social Studies.

    According to sources from the Albanian Ministry of Education and Science, in cooperation with the respective governments and organizations of foreign countries, scholarships have been provided for the Albanian young men, both in the framework of joint agreements and in cooperation with foreign foundations and associations.

    The first country which has offered more fellowships is Turkey with 25 university fellowship and 4 post graduate scholarships, Artan Canaj, Foreign Relations Director in the Ministry of Education and Science, told ATA on Saturday.

    Among the others countries, which have offered scholarships and training courses for the Albanian young men during the academic year 1998- 1999, are Russia and Poland with 10 fellowships each. In Rumania, some 4 Albanian young men have started this year their studies, 5 are in the Colleges of the United World, 4 in Hungary, meanwhile that Italy accorded 5 scholars in the agricultural school of Rome. France has trained some 16 teachers of the French language in Paris.

    Canaj also said that fellowships have been also accorded by Greece, Egypt, Rumania and Bulgaria, but these have individual character. Many students or pupils have privately found fellowships in other European countries or the United States.

    Many scholarships have been provided by Italy, Japan, India ad Israel. /pas/mt/

    [11] State Inspectorate of Labour says 15.8% of employees do "black" job

    TIRANA, Dec. 26 (ATA) - By L. Thanasi: The State Inspectorate of Labour has exercised during this year constant controls in different subjects. According to an annual analysis, carried out in the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, it comes out that the State Inspectorate of Labour has exercised during this year some 4 333 controls which have been carried out in domestic and foreign private and state subjects.

    The result of these controls was that out of 107.900 employed people, some 15.8% of them do "black" job.

    From the subjects controlled, some 81.7% of them has been Albanian private subjects, 7.4% has been foreign private subjects, 5.6% has been state subjects and 5.1% has been joint subjects. /lh/mt/

    [12] Some 20 Albanian children, enslaved in Italy, can be returned in Albania upon their desire

    TIRANA, Dec. 26 (ATA) - By G. Dilaveri: The efforts for the repatriation of some 20 Albanian children, who were victims of a criminal network, uncovered recently in Italy, have already started.

    Upon the initiative of the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, Kadri Rrapi, the Department of the General Administration of social services close to this ministry, has set up contacts with Italian counterpart institutions for the integration in Albania of the children who want to turn back, the press adviser in the ministry reported.

    The Italian police had discovered several days ago an Albanian group who had enslaved and exploited some 20 children, being sent to Italy after promising them regular job. After the arrival in Italy, the victims were forced to beg along the streets, because otherwise they would face maltreatment.

    For the return and reintegration of children in Albania, Minister Rrapi has asked assistance from the social center Don Bosko which operates in Tirana since 4 years. In this center, there is a family-house which takes care about 15 gipsy children.

    The problem of reintegration of the children in Albania was also discussed during the meeting that the Italian Minister of Social Solidarity, Livia Turco, held in the beginning of the week with Minister Rrapi. /lh/mt/

    [13] Environment National Agency asks monitoring of pollution

    TIRANA, Dec. 26 (ATA) - By R. Xhuvani: The monitoring of the environment pollution and defining of norms of this pollution from respective institutions should be carried out as soon as possible, the specialist in the National Agency of Environment (NAE), Drita Dade, told ATA on Saturday.

    The monitoring aims at completing the legal framework for the air, water and land, adds Dade.

    The monitoring of the environment will be carried out by 6 ministries and 10 institutions which have direct connection with this field.

    The introduction of tough measures for this problem is of special importance regarding the dangerous remains, on the protection of the purity of air and water. /lh/mt/

    [14] "Tirane through photography" opens activity "Tirana table"

    TIRANE, Dec.26 (ata) - By K Shehu: The photo exhibition "Tirane through photography" on Saturday before noon inaugurated the activity "Tirane table" in the International Cultural Centre.

    Over 50 photos displayed in the exhibition reflected the values of the capital, Tirane in the past years. With photos shot by amateur and professional photographers, the exhibition displays the oldest collection of the photos taken from Tirana in the past years.

    The activity "Tirana table" has created its tradition held at the end every year. It is the fourth successive year and organizer of it are the Department of Culture in the Tirane town-hall and the International Cultural Centre./dast/xh/

    [15] Telecom 34 % more incomes than envisaged

    TIRANE, Dec.26 (ata) - By M Pupa: "During the past 9 months of this year, Telecom has realised an income of 34 per cent more than envisaged, said to ATA the general director of Telecom, Dhimitraq Rafti.

    Telecom has accumulated from the debtors 30 per cent of the total debt and the leaders of the company are processing the information so that to close automatically the telephone numbers whose subscribers are debtors to the telecom or the telephone numbers of those subscribers who have not paid the monthly payment for the telephone in time.

    "The high figures are a result of the good management of the investments the total of which for the past 9 months has amounted to 660 million lek," said Rafti.

    The income of the Telecom from the telephone cards were 30 per cent more than forecast. There are 290 public telephones throughout Albania and this number will double soon with the installation of 210 other public telephones. /dast/xh/

    [16] Workshop in field of social insurances held

    TIRANE, dEC.26 (ATA) - By Lolita Thanasi: In the context of the annual program for the qualification of the Administration staff of the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, and in cooperation with the Institute of Labour and Social Affairs and the Institute of Social Insurances, the final 6 week workshop was held in Hotel Florida in Durres recently.

    The topic of the workshop was "Management and Policies in Field of Social Insurances."

    24 workers of the system of social insurances from all the districts of Albania were trained from this workshop. /dast/xh/

    [17] 1 800 people employed through labour offices during 1998 in Vlore

    VLORE, Dec.26 (ata) - By Harilla Koci: 1 800 people have been employed with the mediation of the office of labour in the city of Vlore during 1998, the director of this office, Sejmen Gjokoli told a news conference.

    1020 people have been employed in projects of public works implemented in Vlore by the office of labour as well as by the private and state subjects, explained Gjokoli.

    He also added that the district of Vlore takes the first place in the Republic with 32 projects of public works applied during this year.

    There are nearly 13 000 unemployed presently in this district, a part of whom receive the respective social assistance. dast/xh/
