Albanian customs officials said to ATA that many long vehicles have crossed the border to Greece along with many passengers' buses. The same sources reported that beginning with Monday, the customs staff will be very busy with clearance of goods as a result of the one-week interruption of work. According to Rafti, the daily losses from the trade are estimated at 50-60 million lek. /dast/xh/ Albanian Telegraphic Agency[03] Albania takes part in French Speaking Ministerial Conference in BucharestTIRANE, Dec.5 (ata)- By R Xhuvani: In his address to the 12th session of the French-Speaking Ministerial Conference which started on Dec.4, 1998 in Bucharest, Albanian Minister of Education and Science, Et'hem Ruka pointed out the will and determination of the Albanian Government to have the status of a full member, differently from that of the observer it has so far, in this broad political-cultural movement which united 52 countries from all over the world."I stress here before you the political will and wish of the Albanian Government not only to become a full member of the movement but also to bring our contribution to the consolidation of the cooperation in the context of the French-speaking community," said Minister Ruka. Albanian Minister had a meeting with his Rumanian counterpart, Andrei Marga, and discussed with him the possibilities and concrete ways to consolidate the relations in the field of education, to the benefit of the two friendly peoples of Albania and Romania. The two ministers agreed to sign at the end of January 1999, the Protocol of Cooperation between the ministries of education of Albania and Romania. /dast/xh/ Albanian Telegraphic Agency[04] Modern-equipped operational police halls in VloreVLORE, Dec.5(ata) - By Harilla Koci: Two modern-equipped halls for police are being established for the Police Department of the Prefecture of Vlore.On is in the premises of the police department while the other is in the Sazan Island, and it will observe the coastal line, this was declared Saturday in the city of Vlore during a visit of a representative group of Italian mission attached to the Public Order Ministry, led by the mission chief Colonel Simone. During the visit, besides the talk for the installation of the equipment in the two halls, they have also determined the directions of cooperation which include public order police, that of crime and the border police. The vice-director of police in Vlore, colonel Rebani Memushi said to ATA that this is part of a project of the Italian Government to strengthen the Albanian police and has been initially applied in the police departments of the prefectures of Tirane and Durres. The Italian group in Vlore, consisting of specialists of various fields, will assemble the equipment and train the staff that will use it. The assembly work for the equipment will be over within December this year. /dast/xh/ Albanian Telegraphic Agency[05] OSCE verifiers arrive in PrizrenPRISHTINE, Dec 6 - ATA correspondent in Prishtine, Behlul Jashari, reports that 60 verifiers of the OSCE mission arrived in Prizren today, bringing their number to 110 so far.Some 200 out of 2000 verifiers of the OSCE mission in Kosova will be settled in Prizren, a city near the border with Albania. /dast/lm/ Albanian Telegraphic Agency[06] Masked gunmen attack Athens-Tirane service busTEPELENE, Dec 6 (ATA)-By H. Cani, Masked gunmen shot at the Athens-Tirane bus along the Tepelene-Ballsh road segment on Sunday, wounding at least four passengers and killing a policeman of the Tepelene commissariat, according to preliminary police reports.The same sources report that six buses of the Athens-Tirane were accompanied by a Tepelene police officer for the area including the Mallakaster zone. Several armed men shot at the first bus without warning, injuring at least four passengers, while the policeman accompanying the passengers died of gunshot wounds. The whole police effective in Tepelene are now on the high alert and have undertaken a series of check operations near the Kras village, where the grave incident took place. They are also checking all vehicles moving on this road axis. /dast/lm/ Albanian Telegraphic Agency[07] Hani i hotit customs point still closedKOPLIK, Dec 6 (ATA)-By M. Malja,The Hani i hotit customs point, Malesi e Madhe district, has been closed since last March. The unilateral closure of this point by the Yugoslav side has substantially reduced the number of people moving on both sides of the border as well as the movement of traders. This point continues to be closed despite frequent intercessions of the Albanian government and local bodies with the Yugoslav authorities. Economic specialists say that both sides suffer great economic loss due to the blockage of this border crossing. The customs of the two countries have lost some tens of thousands of dollars. The closure of this point has also led to the continuation of contraband through the Shkoder lake. This lake after 1993 became a smuggling centre of fuel, cigarette, coffee and other goods. The Minister of National Minorities of Montenegro, Luigj Gjoncaj, during a visit to the Shkoder city recently, pledged the opening of this border point. /dast/lm/ Albanian Telegraphic Agency[08] Aid distribution for Kosova refugees continuesSHKODER, Dec 6 (ATA)-The distribution of a contingent of aid for the Kosova refugees by the Shkoder-based Islamic humanitarian association "El Reliev", began on Sunday.The director of the association, Sait del Hamit, told ATA that the aid addresses one thousand Kosovars accommodated in Shkoder families. Meanwhile this association has distributed aid consisting of school materials for 250 Kosovar children. This is the fourth aid contingent the "El Reliev" association distributes to the Kosova refugees in this city. Currently, some 3000 Kosova refugees have settled in this city. /dast/lm/ Albanian Telegraphic Agency[09] Some 600 000 leks for Vlore city libraryVLORE, Dec 6 (ATA)-By H.Koci,Some 600 000leks have been earmarked for the Vlore city library. The director of the Vlore district cultural centre, Kozma Billa, told ATA that this fund is provided by the municipal council. This fund will also help repair the premises of the building, in which the library will be located, said Billa. This will put an end to the three-year Odyssey of the Vlore city library. After a decision of the municipal council in 1995 this library was transferred to the premises of the palace of culture "Laberia", under very unsuitable conditions. After constant demands by the cultural centre, also backed by the city town-hall, the Fiance Ministry gave the green light to changing the destination of this library. /dast/lm/ Albanian Telegraphic Agency[10] Athens-Tirane service bus looted by gunmen -Policeman accompanying passengers killed-TIRANE, Dec 6 (ATA)-A policeman of the Tepelene district police station was killed on the Kakavije-Tirane road on Sunday at around 12.15.The spokesman of the Public Order Ministry told ATA that in order to protect the citizens travelling on the Greece-Albania line, policemen of the districts of Gjirokaster, Tepelene and Mallakaster, accompany passengers on the buses of this line. Four criminals, hiding three fire arms, had also got on the bus number plated PAB 21-93 of the Athens-Tirane service among the passengers in the Greek city of Patra. At the site called Kthesat e Greshices, these persons disarmed the policeman and after killing him robbed some 45-50 persons on the bus. Later they fled to unknown destination. The spokesman says that the investigation team from Tepelene and a group of experts from the Criminal Police department of the Public Order Ministry have gone to the area.
