  • [01] Serb army block Ponoshec of Gjakova

    PRISHTINA, April 19 - ATA correspondent Behlul Jashari reported that the large forces of Serbian army blocked up late on Sunday the village of Ponoshec in Gjakova near the border area with Albania.

    The military forces were removed from the garrisons of the Gjakova city and deployed in every road of the village with tanks, armoured carriers, trucks and heavy armaments, division of the Democratic League of Kosova (LDK) said.

    A source from Ponoshec said that the situation in the village was worse and added that Serb military forces were directed to Junik.

    The LDK spokeswoman in Gjakova Besa Arllati said that the inhabitants of Ponoshec and other surrounding Albanian ethnic villages were very worried about the dangerous developments and what was going to happen in the future. das/ak/

    [02] Serb military forces widely deployed in Kosova

    PRISHTINE, April 19 - ATA correspondent Behlul Jashari reported that

    the situation in Kosova was increasingly worsening. Besides the curfew and operations in Drenica and border areas, in Gjakova and Decan, the Serbian military and police forces were widely deployed all over Kosova.

    Serbian military forces with ten trucks and heavy guns were deployed early on Sunday in the surroundings of Decan and in the gardens of Albanian houses. Seven Albanian families were evacuated.

    On Saturday the Serbian forces marched and held training in Decan city. Powerful explosions were heard in Peja city late on Saturday due to military training in Bellopoje village, press of Prishtina said.

    The center for Information in Kosova (QIK) reported that on Sunday at 09.00.a.m. over 40 tanks of the Serbian army were deployed along the Shtimje-Prizren road in the hill of Kryqi i Bellincit (Bellinc cross) overlooking a wide territory of settlements along the Prishtina-Skopje and Shtimje-Prizren roads as well as Lipjan with its surrounding villages.

    Serb forces have been launching military training in the areas of Mitrovica, Vushtri and other areas of Kosova. das/ak/

    [03] Defence minister visits Greek contingent in Yzberisht

    TIRANA, April 20 (ATA) - By I. Paço: The Greek Defence minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos with his Albanian counterpart Sabit Brokaj visited on Sunday the Greek military contingent in Yzberisht, Tirana.

    In a lunch on Easter Holidays, Greek minister was said that 205 soldiers of the contingent will donate blood for the patients of the Military hospital of Tirana before they leave Albania in November.

    The commander of the Greek forces, Fotis Zimberdikas, briefed the minister Tsohatzopoulos about the results achieved during one-year stay in Albania.

    The Greek minister said: "We are people of historical links and are being trying to establish peace and stability in the region through cooperation."

    The military infantry unit in Mezez was the last leg of the visit of the Greek Defence minister in Tirana. Both ministers attended the inauguration ceremony of the reconstructed unit of Mezez. s.sh/das/ak/

    [04] Albania president to discuss local elections with political parties

    TIRANA, April 20 (ATA) - President of the Republic of Albania Rexhep Meidani will discuss on Wednesday with representatives of political parties and social structures the launching of partial elections for local administration.

    Press and information office at the presidency said on Monday that the cabinet of president had formally informed the parliamentary political parties and state authorities that the meeting will be held on Wednesday at 13.00. p.m.

    Non-parliamentary political parties aiming at participating at the local elections are also invited to attend the meeting.

    The local partial elections will be held in those communes or municipalities where the local leaders have abandoned the posts during the unrest last year or released for different reasons. s.s/das/ak/

    [05] NATO delegation on crisis management visits Tirana

    TIRANA, April 20 (ATA) - A delegation of the Atlantic Alliance (NATO) on crisis management headed by the American John Kriendler at the Department of crisis and operation management at the International Staff said on Monday in Tirana that NATO was ready to assist the Albanian army in handling these issues, sources of the Interior Ministry said.

    The delegation, which is in Tirana for an official three day-visit, met with the deputy chief of General Staff of the Albanian army, Colonel Mehmet Musaj, who stressed the importance of a cooperation between the Albanian military experts and those of NATO for a solution to these problems. s.s/mima/ak/

    [06] Minister of Trade, Tourism released from the post on his request

    TIRANA, April 20 (ATA) - President of the Republic Rexhep Meidani said on Monday that the minister of Trade and Tourism Shaqir Rukaj had been released from his post upon his request to pave the way for being nominated to another post in a near future, press and information office at the presidency said.

    Tirana, April 20 (ATA) - Monday's average exchange rate in the informal market of Albanian currency "lek" against foreign currencies like USD, DM, SFR, ITL was in favour of these last.

    So $1 = 159,10 lek, lossing 0,10 points compared with yesterday's 159, 20 lek.

    The DM was traded for 88,20 lek, lossing 0,30 points compared to yesterday's 88,50 lek.

    The ITL (1000) was traded for 88,40 lek lossing 0.20 points compared with yeasterday's 88,60 lek.

    GRD (100) was exchanged for 50,20 lek, lossing 0,10 points compared with yesterday's 50,30

    The Swiss Franc was traded for 106,30 lek lossing 2,00 points compared with yesterday's 108,30 lek and so on.

    [08] Tirana has the highest unemployment rate

    Tirana, April 20 (ATA) - Out of the 207.420 unemployed people in country scale, Tirana has the highest figure with 31,280 persons registered in labour offices.

    In two of Tirana's regions No 1 and No 2 there are 22,175 and 9105 unemployed persons respectively.

    The recent increase of unemployment rate in Tirana has come as a result a migratory wave from country's other districts, the bulk of them with secondary education.

    Regarding the unemployment rate after Tirana comes Shkodra district, north east Albania with 18,579 unemployed, the majority of them have elementary education.

    Then comes Elbasani district with 16,278 unemployed people. Also high rate of unemployment is noticed in districts like Berat with 13,480 unemployed people and Vlora with 13,457 unemployed people.

    Devoll district, south east Albania has the lowest unemployed rate with only 789 people.

    [09] Setting up of common energy market is aimed

    Tirana, April 20 (ATA) - Member countries of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) signed recently the memorandum on linking their electric grids, the chief of cabinet at the Ministry of Public Economy and Privatization told ATA Monday.

    In signing the memorandum the member countries like Albania, Greece, Rumania, Turkey, Bulgaria, Armenia and Moldova were joint by other countries like Russia, Ukraine and Azerbajan.

    Memorandums' goal is the commencement of a feasibility study of electric grid of participant countries.

    The survey will last 15 months with a cost of $2,5 million and will be carried out by participants of all countries. The study forecasts the appraisal of needs for electric power of BSCE countries.

    They also defined the topics for setting up a joint market on electric power, principals on selling the power, its standards etc.

    Worth mentioning is the establishing of among countries' connection in this field and the technical study of energy potential for new links.

    [10] Tax and customs revenues in country scale mounted lek 12,3 bln

    Tirana, April 20 (ATA) - Around lek 12,3 billion went to state coffers during the first quarter, falling in lek 8,3 billion from customs revenues and over lek 4 billion from taxes on country's trade activities.

    While taxes in country scale have overcome their targets, revenues from customs for the first three months are realised to 88 percent.

    Incomes from the Value Added Tax are realised in lek 4,7 billion, from custom duties in lek 2,7 billion and from excises on imported goods are collected lek 477 million.

    It is also reported that from taxes in country's scale, Tirana district bear the main burden with over lek 2 billion.

    A quick survey on goods entering Albania during this period shows that from Durres custom house were collected lek 2 billion overcoming the plan.

    While Tirana custom has picked up over lek 1 billion realising only 51 percent of the plan.

    Customs houses of Kapshtica, Pogradeci, Kakavija, Lezha and Peshkopija have surpassed their targets.

    [11] WB allocates around $7,1 mln for agro processing industry

    Tirana, April 20 (ATA) - On going World Bank's projects to develop Albanian agriculture have been implemented during the first quarter of 1998 in some sectors like rehabilitation of irrigation system and agro processing industry.

    A fund worth $7,1 million has started to be released in supporting the agro food processing sector. The allocation among others include the enhancement of marketing of farmers' product.

    The project is being carried out in two directions: farmers supporting and investments in these sectors.

    The project which ends on June 30, 1999 is covered by the World Bank with $6 million and Dutch government with $1 million.

    Sources from the ministry of Agriculture report that this year the agro processing industry is planned to be included into developing platform.

    According to specialists at the agro processing department, all measures aim at setting up conditions to locally process agricultural, livestock and fish products.

    [12] Long term deposits in Italian Lire are preferred

    Tirana, April 20 (ATA) - People who have chosen the Savings Bank to save their deposits in Italian Lire (ITL) prefer long term deposits.

    Around 91,6 percent of total deposits belong to fixed term deposits, while the rest fall to non fixed term deposits.

    In fixed term deposits more preferred are 12-month term deposits which take 50,9 percent of the total, while 3-month term deposits take 27,6 percent, 6-month term deposits take 12 percent and one month term deposit take only 1,1 percent.

    [13] Trade deficit jumps lek 22 billion

    Tirana, April 20 (ATA) - The trade deficit in the first quarter is deepened, reaching at lek 22 billion.

    In total value of trade exchanges estimated at lek 34,6 billion, imports volume is figured to be lek 28,5 billion, while export volume at lek 6,1 billion.

    Based on the data from the Customs General Directorate an increase in trade deficit is noted month in month out.

    Thus from lek 6,5 billion in January trade deficit augmented to lek 7, 6 billion in February and to lek 8,1 billion in March.

    While last year trade deficit rose to lek 75 billion, this year plans, based on drafted programs aim at reducing it, but the current pace is not justifying the forecast.

    [14] Health sector aid to be better managed

    Tirana, April 18 (ATA) - A better and more effective administration of aid to Albanian health sector was in the focus of the meeting that minister Leonard Solis had recently with representatives of Albanian Health Fund (AHF) organization.

    Meeting's aim was the setting up of a committee to deliver the aid worth $1,8 million and defining the procedures in properly and effectively distributing it.

    The aid will be released in June is and is make up mainly by surgical equipment for hospitals.

    Meanwhile, the aid transportation will be carried out by the United States government.

    AHF delegation was headed by its president William Johnson. US Ambassador in Tirana, Marisa Lino was present in the meeting as well.
