[02] PAVILION OF ALBANIAN MEDIEVAL ART ESTABLISHED IN ART GALLERY IN TIRANE - Iconostasis reassembled from over 350 pieces -

    Reportage by Atalanta Pasko

TIRANE, AUGUST 26 (ATA) - From now on, the Art Gallery in Tirane will have a pavilion of Albanian medieval art. Some 28 large icons and 19 small ones, as well as two iconostases which have just been restored, have been displayed on the walls of a hall on the second floor of the Art Gallery. All of them belong to the Byzantine and post-Byzantine periods and date from the 13th century to the second half of the 19th century.

At the moment, only Christian art is represented in the pavilion of mediaeval art, because Moslem art is hard to display, being reflected mostly in immovable religious objects.

About 20 of the displayed icons have been restored. Before restoration they were covered by dust and layers of dirt and oils that kept colors from coming out and hid the beauty created by the painter's hand. Among the painters whose works are exhibited in the art gallery are Onufri (16th century), Onufer Qiprioti (16th-17th centuries), and Mihal Anagnosti (19th century). Others are anonymous, anonymous but great, speaking the language of art from centuries when the history of the Albanian nation faced conquest and destruction over and over again. The most ancient icon, Saint Spiridhoni, retrieved from the Church of Ristozi in Korce, with obvious fire damage, is the work of an anonymous artist of the 12th-14th centuries. Of particular value is the Virgin Mary in marble, a Uniate icon, unique among 10 000 icons in institutions and museums of Albania.

The wood-carved iconostasis of the Skore church of Gjirokaster is one of 60 iconostases of high artistic value preserved in Albania.

After the Skore church was ruined and turned into a cooperative stable in 1967 (in the general anti-religious movement undertaken by the communist dictatorship), the iconostasis was put under the protection of the Institute of Cultural Monuments.

Its odyssey was long, from Skore to the Monastery of Ardenice in Fier, then to Bishqethem of Lushnje. By the time of its arrival at the Institute, it had been split into more than 350 pieces. Its recreation seemed almost impossible.

But now, thanks to the restoration work carried out by Ali Ago, it stands in the gallery with all its magnificence. It is 9.5 meters high and 4.5 meters wide.

The "Royal Doors" of another golden-plated iconostasis have not yet been restored.

The restorations started in January of this year and went on during the entire period of protests and destruction and then the country's political changes.

In the same period, several Gallery workers went to Korce and took seven icons from the Medieval Museum of this city, adding them to the Gallery's fund. It was February. The streets were unsafe, and many people thought of leaving Albania...

The restoration laboratory of the Gallery, which returned the icons to their previous splendour, was created in 1995. The chief of the laboratory, Eduard Sopi, has been working for years restoring icons in many churches of Albania, including those on the rocky cliffs of Prespa Island. His eye can detect beauty however deep it may be hidden in the dark layers of the dirt of centuries.

"Our Byzantine art has a broad inheritance and a rich store. It should be represented in the Gallery of Arts," the director of the Gallery, Alush Shima, says.

He adds that he plans to create another pavilion with classic works of Greek-Roman culture found in Albania, particularly grave capitals and steles.

"Thus the possibility is created for the Gallery of Arts to be called a Museum of Art, and to include art of several periods, like many other world museums," Shima says.

The restoration of the icons of the new pavilion of the Gallery of Arts cost 20 000 dollars (funds supplied by the Ministry of Culture). The person who whitewashed the walls of the pavilion received some 300 000 lek in a week, while the monthly salary of a restoration painter is some 7 000 leks. xh/lm/ki/

[03] PURCHASING POWER MARKS DROP IN SHOPS DISPLAYING WELL-KNOWN BRANDS

TIRANA, AUG 27 (ATA) - By A Gjata: Stores displaying-well known brands like Benetton, Reebok, Pierre Cardin, Adidas and Gold Star have marked a drop in their selling compared with the same period last year.

The goal of opening up stores with outstanding commodities, besides selling them, was creating new job places. Thus, the Adidas representatives had planes to open an affiliate for the production of sport wearing.

But in these hot days with high prices, even the visitors are a rare thing.

A spectacular drop has been noticed in the luxurious shops, boutiques and golden shops.

The collapse of pyramid schemes swallowed many capitals of common people and this made impossible the purchasing of expensive goods.

Signs of this drop were noticed since the beginning of the year, when the purchasing power for these articles was halved, said one of the shop-girls of Adidas in the Rruga e Durresit, in Tirana. /kei/mt/k

TIRANA, AUGUST 27 (ATA)- By Aurel Simoni, Nikos Kostandopulos, chairman of the Party of Left Alliance and Progress (Synaspismos) said that economic emigrants in Greece should be legalised and guarantees for defending their free movement and employment should be sanctioned.
