  • [01] DR VRANITZKY MEETS WITH MULTINATIONAL FORCE CHIEFS IN ALBANIA

TIRANE, JULY 1 (ATA) - The former Austrian Chancellor, Franz Vranitzky, and Mr Catherine La Lumiere met Monday with General Forlani in the command of the Multinational Protection Forces.

Taking part in the meeting also were other high officials of OSCE and many officers of the MPF.

In his address, Mr Vranitzky said: "After I have worked for several weeks with you, I would like to express to you our thanks.

Everybody said this nation was not ready for elections, but the result was rather positive and with few incidents, and this was made possible thanks to your work although you had made clear your significant position, that you would intervene."

Whereas Ms La Lumiere conveyed to General Forlani and other officials present in the meeting a greeting, by saying: "Albania is a sick country and we, civilians and militaries, will help it on the road towards democracy. I have seen militaries working in terrain and I would like to express to you my confidence that it is not difficult for a military to enjoy at the same time the respect of the poopulation, from which I have heard only positive considerations."

Taking the floor, general Forlani stressed that he was speaking as a commander of the MPF and not as an Italian.

"The results reached," added general Forlani, "were made possible due to the collaboration and professionalism of all my colleagues. All the success of the military mission," he said in conclusion, "will result to a successful political and diplomatic direction." ssh/jz/xh/
