  • [01] U.S AMBASSADRESS IN TIRANA, MARISA LINO, ON ALBANIAN TV

TIRANA, MARCH 14 (ATA) - In a declaration broadcast on Albanian Television today, the U.S. Ambasssadress in Tirana, Marisa Lino, said:

"Today I would like to talk with you in the name of my government and the people of the U.S.A. We have long friendly relations with the Albanian people and want to work with you so that you continue your road towards democracy, towards economic success and full membership in western organizations.

The United States of America are not leaving Albania. A part of my team and me will continue to stay to treat with your government the numerous problems your country is faced with. We shall continue to function as the U.S. embassy in Tirana and we'll carry out all our functions.

We are evacuating the U.S. citizens who want to leave Albania, the family members of the embassy and a part of its staff which is not so important. This is made as a result of the present general situation in Albania and the temporary lack of normal transport means for those who want to leave. This is something we owe to our citizens and I demand from all Albanians to cooperate with us during this period for all the U.S. citizens who want to leave Albania. I advise them to contact with the U.S. Embassy.

At the same time, we are working closely with your new government to help for the future of Albania. We are keeping close contacts with all our European allies and with international financial institutions to make efforts and to help your new government in this difficult situation. It is essentially important that all of us, Albanians and Albania's friends, to work together to stop this violence which has so painfully killed and wounded many people so far.

We ask you to cooperate with your new government and put an end to the present violence. The violent way of acting has no room in democracy.

Democracy is a responsibility of everyone and for every citizen. It begins with each of you. We will work with you and your new government. We demand the same from each of you." ake/

[02] ALBANIAN POLICE PATROLS IN TIRANA STREETS

TIRANA, MARCH 14 (ATA) - Today afternoon armoured vehicles started patrolling through Tirana streets and catching people with arms. This act is having a general positive effect. Fire of arms in the air is becoming rarer.
