  • [01] CUSTOMS LEGISLATION STRICTLY APPLIED - Matoshi

TIRANA, JAN 7 (ATA) By Agim Baci: 150 million leks is the amount of incomes from customs in 1996 from the sequestrations, excluding the branch of control, or 33 per cent more than the year 1995.

"This has been due to an uplift of professionalism of employees, where 60 per cent of the customs officials have the university education", told ATA the deputy director of the directory of customs, who is also the chairman of the customs police, Avdyl Matoshi.

But this year is followed by a severity against the people who have violated the customs legislation. Thus, 83 customs officials and 46 from the customs police are discharged from work, while against 129 people from customs and 75 from the customs police are taken different administrative measures.

"This has been due to the rigorous application of the customs legislation in the field of customs violations. Some 116 smuggling cases are denounced in the attorney's office as well as 150 cases for the vehicles which have not payed the customs tax", declared Matoshi.

The Albanian government in cooperation with UNDP, PHARE program and the Council of Europe has finished or reconstructed a series of border check points. /a.ke/jz/mt/k

[03] STUDY OF ALBANIAN MORPHOLOGY STRUCTURE PROMOTED

TIRANA, JAN 8 (ATA)- By S. Sharrexhi, Morphology, the first volume of the Albanian Language grammar, revised edition based on the scientific literature of the last 20 years, marks a significant step ahead in the study of the Albanian language morphology structure.

"Considering the urgent demands for a new edition of the Albanian Grammar, the working group saw it necessary to improve the version of '76", " prof. Shaban Demiraj, editor of this volume, (chairman of the Academy of Sciences), told ATA.

The improvements in this volume, in which the gramatical categories remain the same, are related to a series of new concepts.

"The improvements carried out from the theoretical point of view and in the selection of examples make this volume equal to the editions of the other Balkan languages," Demiraj said.

The new edition of the Albanian grammar meets not only the needs of the Higher School on Phonetics, Morphology and Syntax, three fundamental subjects of the Abanian language, but also those of the qualified readers of the Albanian language scholars. jz/lm/k

[06] CROATIA ALBANIANS FAVOUR ORGANIZATION IN COMMUNITIES AND NON POLITICAL ASSOCIATIONS

TIRANA, JAN 8 (ATA) In Croatia actually exist 11 associations and political parties of Albanians. Among the political parties the oldest is the Democratic League of Albanians in Croatia, which celebrated recently the 6th anniversary of its foundation, BBC radio reports.

This party was very active at the beginning of the disintegration of Former Yugoslavia and mainly after the outbreak ofwar, when it was engaged to help the Albanian soldiers to desert from the Yugoslav army. Besides this, in Croatia exist the Albanian Christian Democratic Party, the Albanian Islamic Democratic Union as well as the branch of the Party for Democratic Prosperity.

The activity of all these parties is already extincted. Even the leaders of these parties do not have enough clear the role of the political parties. They say that the aim of their foundation was to help the political parties in Kosova, and some of them were found at the beginning as their branches. But after Croatia became independent, they were registered as Croatian political parties and participated in elections.

The Albanians of Croatia do not have the status of the temporary citizens, but they are Croatian citizens and in this context they have the right of political organization on national basis. But the Albanians in Croatia support more and more the organization in forms of communities and associations of citizens. Their central organization is the Albanian community, which is the representative of Albanians in Croatia, is non- political and is financed by the budget of the Croatian government for national minorities. /ag/jz/mt/k

TIRANA, JAN 8 (ATA) - By Miranda Kora: The canyons of Benca, living ecosystems of Albanian nature (Southern Albania) with a longitude of 10 km and depth of several meters, will now be studied by the Association of Environmental Protection in Tirana.

"The project aims, on the one hand, to film, make evident, to prepare the inventory, the map, and the publication of these values and on the other hand to sensitize the public opinion about the need to protect these values," said Nasip Mecaj, coordinator of this 5 month project, financed by the local office of Tirana of the Regional Environmental Centre, with headquarters in Budapest.

Canyons of Benca have on their slopes some cave entrances of speleogical interest. The river waters have trout (salmo thymus) a relic autochthonous living creature of this river.

Several ancient castles lie on the coasts of these canyons.

According to coordinator Mecaj, they are expecting investors to act in three directions: the use of these assets, elevation of the welfare and protection of the environment in these zones. jz/xh/sh/
