[01] MATHS - ONE OF PREFERRED SUBJECTS IN 8 FORM SCHOOLSTIRANA, JAN 1 (ATA) - Pupils of eight form schools in Albania consider mathematics one of their preferred subjects at school.A recent poll by the Valuation Centre of the Institute of Pedagogical Studies shows that 28 per cent of the pupils in the elementary schools like mathematics so much, 38 per cent consider it one of the two most preferred subjects whereas 46 per cent one of the three most preferred subjects. The poll also shows that for the pupils of fifth grade, maths takes the second place as for its difficulty in learning, after the subject of history, whereas for the pupils of 6th, 7th and 8th grades, maths is ranked after the subjects of physics and chemistry. kled/xh/ Albanian Telegraphic Agency[02] ALBANIAN POLICE HAVE UNCOVERED ACTIVITY OF CRIMINAL GROUPS IN 1996TIRANA, DEC 30 (ATA)-During 1996 Albanian police have discovered the criminal activity of several groups, posing a great social threat in Albania.At his year-end-conference Interior Minister Halit Shamata mentioned "the interception of the criminal groups in the cities of Berat, Shkoder, Korce, Durres, the discovery of the criminal activity of the terrorist organisation "Albanian Justice revenge", the group of vehicle robbery, the group that has falsified official documents and vouchers and other groups. The terrorist organisation "Albanian justice revenge", which has committed 26 crimes during the latest years, was among the most dangerous groups because of the political and terrorist character, as well as because it was run by former "Sigurimi". Hoxha,In the Kukes district, Northern Albania, infantile diseases and mortality have been lowered. Actually it is 30 per thousand. "The intensified care for the health of mother and child, through the uplift of the maternity consultation work, has influenced in this direction, " the director of the district health service, Nikolin Martini, told ATA. From 45 consultation rooms functioning in this district, 44 are in the village. Besides 28 doctors, 25 of whom are in the village, some 170 midwives and nurses, 162 of whom are in the village, look after the health of mother and child. According to Martini, most of this year's 11 500 medical visits have been carried out in the villages. s.sh/kei/lm /Z/ Albanian Telegraphic Agency[04] THREE CANADIAN COMPANIES HAVE STARTED SEARCHES FOR MINERALS IN ALBANIATIRANA, JAN 1 (ATA) - Besides the company Nebex, two other companies from Canada, Karma and Royal Road have started searches for minerals in Albania following the signing of a contract with Geoalba.These companies are working in northeastern and southeastern zones of Albania searching for chrome, copper, gold ores and other accompanying elements. In some districts of Albania, these companies are studying the existing geological material and in 1997 they will carry out geological studies and workings to discover new mineral bearing zones.kled/xh/Z/ Albanian Telegraphic Agency[05] TEMPUS PROGRAM ALWAYS PRESENT IN FIELD OF UNIVERSITY EDUCATIONTIRANA, JAN 1 (ATA) By Eva Allushi: The reform of university education in Albania is strongly supported by PHARE Program through Tempus program, which expresses the policy of PHARE for the development of human resources in the university education."Tempus program aims at developing the teaching methods in the field of university education, to incite cooperation with the European Union (EU), to support the developments of teaching curricula in the fields of priority in restructuring the university education, as well as to help in training the teaching staff of the higher education institutions", sources of the Tempus office reported. Albania is involved in the Tempus program in the academic year 1992- 1993. Due to the financial aid of this program, which reaches some million ECU, it is made possible the drafting of a series teaching curricula, libraries are enriched, over 1000 education employees are trained, etc. In the course of this aid, a great contribution has given the Joint European Projects (JEP), which help in restructuring the university education, as well as CME projects, financed by Tempus to support the strategy of development in the system of this education. JEP projects occupies 80 per cent of the Budget of the tempus program in Albania. According to the statistics, the number of S-JEP projects for Albania is 23 since 1992, financed by 9.5 million ECU. The other projects are those of the type CME, financed by Tempus to support the strategy of developing the system of university education. Such projects are financed by 233 000 ECU for the academic year 1995-1996. The Tempus program supports with scholarships even the staff of the higher education institutions. Thus, referring the statistics, the number of pedagogues, who have gone in the EU institutions, financed by the General Fund of Scholarships IMG with 1.570 million ECU, have been about 650. The coordination and the support of activities in the field of education and training for the second stage of this program in our country, Tempus 2 (1994-1998), is being realized by the European Training Foundation (ETF). /a.ke/jz/mt/Z/ Albanian Telegraphic Agency[06] SARANDA: HIGH SCHOOL "H. TASINI" INVOLVED IN SOROS PROGRAMSSARANDA, JAN 1 (ATA) By Sh. Hajno: The general high school "Hasan Tasini" in the Saranda district is involved recently in the programs of "SOROS" foundation and the Ministry of Education for the integration of the subject "To learn computer"."The good name of this school, whose results classifies it for years among the best sister like schools in the country, incited the Ministry of Education and SOROS foundation to help concretely the involvement of this subject in the teaching program", the director of the education directory, Perparim Musaj, told ATA. The completion of the information laboratory, where are installed 16 computers, the majority part of which is gift of SOROS, made possible the conduct of a national seminar on information. Attending the seminar were specialists from 15 schools of the country, which are involved in the pilot program of the country. /s.sh/jz/mt/Z/ Albanian Telegraphic Agency[07] ALBANIAN ATHLETE WINS FIRST PLACE IN INTERNATIONAL RUNNING RACE OF NEW YEAR IN BELGRADETIRANA, JAN 1 (ATA) By Aljosha Keko: The 13th international edition of running at the length of 1500 meters on the occasion of the New Year in Yugoslavia was held on December 31, 1996, at 23:58, in the highway Dudovica Llatkovic, in the surroundings of Belgrade.Attending this activity was the 38 year old athlete from Albania, Albert Basha, who has broken the record of the Balkan for the veteran sportsmen in the hurdle race of 400 m, who won the first place among the 40 participants from different countries, with the result 5 minutes and 20 seconds. The aim of the organizers of this traditional race is that the start to be in one year and the finish in the other one. For the first time this race was hld in the year 1984-1985 (end and beginning of the year), at the same time in the same place and the winner was Radisha Markovic of "Mlladosti" team. /a.ke/mt/Z/ Albanian Telegraphic Agency[08] PREUNIVERSITARY EDUCATION TOWARDS VISION 2000TIRANA, JAN 1 (ATA) By P. Shuteriqi: The modernization of the preuniversitary education in its entire complex, as well as the restructuring of the whole education system are the main goals during the year that has just began.The Minister of Education and Sports, Edmond Lulja, told ATA that "the further improvement of the physic infrastructure of school objects, the reconstruction and construction of new buildings, their equipment with laboratories, furniture and didactic objects, will make possible this education system reaches the vision of years 2000". During this period, in the pre-elementary schools will be intensified the presentation of new modern educational patterns in the current conditions and our pedagogical tradition, meanwhile that our 8-year education system will aim at prolonging the obligatory education system.
