The monastery of Panagia Katharon is situated 10 km north of Vathi. The monastery's name probably derives from "Kathara", the twiggies which are burnt in order to clear the ground. The date of the monastery's construction is not known. The only given in the historical sources is that the monastery was renovated in 1696, while for the actual date of construction there are dubious elements. In 1958, the monastery was rebuilt, after being completely deserted during the earthquake in 1953. The visitor should admire the icons from the temple (1832) which are kept in the chapel of Constantine and Helen, at the monastery's bell-tower.
