Lassithi

BACK ISLAND 's MAP INFOXENIOS E-MAIL

Lassithi, at the eastern-most part of Crete, is home to endless, sandy beaches, and fertile plains, producing cereals, olive-oil, carobs and currants, but also early vegetables and bananas. Aside from agriculture, stock-breeding is another occupation for the near 70000 inhabitants of the Prefecture. There are quite a few spots worth visiting in Lassithi, like the Archaeological sites of Gournia and Zakros, the Diktaion Andron, on Dikti mountain, the Toplou monastery and Spinalonga, with its famous Venetian castle. The cosmopolitan air of the island blows strong in Elounda, while other - no less beautiful - cities, towns and villages, like Ierapetra, Agios Nikolaos (capital of the Prefecture), Sitia and Makrigialos, complete the diverse picture of this corner of Crete. Unique to all of Greece, and a "must see" is the forest of Vai, a area filled with palm trees.
