Installation and usage instructions for the ELOT-928 Mac fonts

1. Download the file elot928_mac.sit.hqx from the directory /pub/greek/fonts/mac at ftp.hri.org using anonymous ftp. If you are using fetch don't forget to select "binary" transfer mode.

2. Using an appropriate program (e.g., Stuffit) decompress the file to get a folder with various fonts and files.
3. Of the fonts that you will find in the new folder, drag "Hellas Times" and "Hellas Helvetica" into folder "Fonts" of the "System" folder.
4. Put the file "ELOT92" (keuboard layout) in the "System" suitcase in folder "System".
5. Put the "keyboard menu" system extension in the "Extensions" folder of the "System" folder.

6. In order to read web pages written in Greek (ELOT-928) using Netscape 1.1 you will have to change some of Netscape's settings. Start Netscape, go to the "Options" pull-down menu, choose "Preferences", then "Fonts and Colors", and define:
   • Latin1 encoding
   • MacRoman default encoding
   • Hellas Times as the fixed font, and
   • Hellas Times as the proportional font.
   Depending on your vision/esthetics, you may adjust the font size -- these Greek fonts generally look better at larger sizes...

7. If you are using using Netscape 2.0x you will need to do the following changes. Start Netscape, go to the "Options" pull-down menu, choose "General Preferences". then "Fonts", and define:
   • User-Defined encoding
   • HellasTimes as the proportional font
   • HellasTimes as the fixed font
   Go to the "Options" menu again and choose "Document Encoding" and set it to "User-Defined". Don't forget to save your options at the end so that you don't need to repeat this procedure every time you start Netscape. Depending on your vision/esthetics, you may adjust the font size -- these Greek fonts generally look better at larger sizes...

9. To write in Greek, e.g., using Microsoft Word (5.1 or newer):
   • Select font "Hellas Times" or "Hellas Helvetica" from the font pull-down menu of the program's tool bar.
   • Change the keyboard mapping from "U.S." to "ELOT928" from the pull-down menu the appears at the top right corner of the screen (on the menu bar). Normally there is a U.S.A. flag icon there; change it to the greek flag, otherwise your typing will produce strange results even if you select the greek font inside the word processor.

You may copy/distribute these instructions as well as the files they accompany provided that all files are included so that no problems will occur.
