Turkey - Public Announcement
May 13, 1999
The trial of Kurdistan Worker's Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Ocalan, who
was captured and returned to Turkey earlier this year, is set to start on
May 31. The length of the trial cannot be predicted. Terrorist actions
may occur during the trial period.
In mid-March, concurrent with a brief flurry of increased terrorist
actions in Turkey, the PKK warned tourists against travel to Turkey. The
attacks at that time were not targeted against tourists or foreigners, but
caused injuries and deaths among the Turkish public. Turkish police
authorities made a number of arrests and security was increased. These
stepped-up measures are still in effect. Turkish authorities also took
steps to enhance public safety, which have been effective and remain in
place.
American citizens visiting or residing in Turkey should exercise
appropriate security precautions. For further information regarding travel
in Turkey consult the Consular Information Sheet for Turkey.
This Public Announcement replaces the March 15 Public Announcement for Turkey
to reflect new developments regarding the Ocalan case, and expires July 15,
1999.
